Thiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(III) are ubioquitous systems for surface functionalization. While these systems have been studied extensively in the past there are a still points that need further investigation both from a point of view. For instance, SAMs of long chain thiols which are solid at room temperature have only been grown in solution due to their low vapor pressure. Hence, almost all the reported properties of these SAMs, such as growth mechanism, kinetics, and film structures, are based on solution-grown films. Here long chain thiol SAMs were grown in vacuum by using supersonic molecular beam (SMBD) deposition. This technique not only allows low vapor pressure thiol to be deposited in vacuum in a very controlled way, but it also enables control over the kinetic energies of the deposited molecules. Here we report a helium diffraction study of low coverage striped phase of mercaptoundecanol (MUD) and octadecanethiol (ODT) SAMs on the Au(111) surface. MUD SAMs were observed to form a (11.8 x root 3) unit cell whereas ODT SAMs adopt a (18 x root 3) unit cell. Both of the studied molecules were shown to form disordered physisorbed layers on the chemisorbed first layer, with desorption energies of 72 and 86 kJ/mol, respectively. While four desorption states could be identified for MUD with energies of 118, 136, 141, and 150 kJ/mol, ODT has one chemisorbed and one physisorbed state with desorption energies of 135 and 154 kJ/mol. The results reported here may serve as a reference for comparison of properties of solution-grown and vacuum-deposited thiol SAMs. In addition, the control over the kinetic energy may open up new possibilities in terms of applications that utilize patterned films.

Helium atom diffraction study of low coverage phases of decanethiol self-assembled monolayers prepared by supersonic molecular beam deposition
Albayrak, E.; DUMAN, SONER; Bracco, G.; Danışman, Mehmet Fatih (2013-03-01)
Thiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold surfaces have a wide range of applications including surface patterning and metal contact-organic semiconductor interface modification in organic electronic devices. Here we present our studies about the low coverage phases of decanethiol (CH3(CH2)(9)SH) SAMs on Au(1 1 1) surface, grown in vacuum by supersonic molecular beam deposition. Crystal structures, phase behaviors and desorption energies of these films determined by helium atom diffraction technique are...
Surface structure at hexadecane and halo-hexadecane liquid/vapor interfaces
Esentürk, Okan (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2004-07-29)
Vibrational spectra in the CH stretching region have been acquired from the n-hexadecane, 1-chlorohexadecane, and 1-bromohexadecane liquid/vapor interfaces using broadband vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy. Different polarization conditions of the incident and generated fields are used to assess surface structure based on functional group alignment along the Surface normal (SsumSvisPIR) and within the plane of the surface (SsumPvisSIR). The n-hexadecane liquid/vapor interface evinces a surprising degre...
Development of a ReaxFF Reactive Force Field for Interstitial Oxygen in Germanium and Its Application to GeO2/Ge Interfaces
Nayir, Nadire; van Duin, Adri C. T.; Erkoç, Şakir (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2019-01-17)
We developed the ReaxFF force field parameters for Ge/O/H interactions, specifically targeted for the applications of Ge/GeO2 interfaces and O-diffusion in bulk Ge. The original training set, taken from the Zheng et al. work, includes quantum mechanics (QM) data for equations of state and heats of formation of GeO and GeO2 condensed phases as well as dissociation energies for single and double bonds of Ge and angle distortion of O-Ge-O. We expanded this training set with the additional crystal data containi...
Relative Photon-to-Carrier Efficiencies of Alternating Nanolayers of Zinc Phthalocyanine and C-60 Films Assessed by Time-Resolved Terahertz Spectroscopy
Esentürk, Okan; Lane, Paul A.; Heilweil, Edwin J. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2009-10-29)
Multilayer and 1:1 blended films of zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and buckminsterfullerene (C-60) were investigated as model active layers for solar cells by time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy (TRTS). Relative photon-to-carrier efficiencies were determined from ultrafast decay dynamics of photogenerated carriers using 400 and 800 nm excitation for delay times up to 0.5 ns. The findings are in good agreement with reported solar-cell device measurements, and the results exhibit a near linear increase of the re...
Hydrogen-bonded layer-by-layer films of block copolymer micelles with pH-responsive cores
Erel Göktepe, İrem; Zhuk, Aliaksandr; Sukhishvili, Svetlana A. (Elsevier BV, 2011-03-01)
We report on construction of hydrogen-bonded monolayers and multilayers of micelles of the poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PDEA-b-PNIPAM) with PNIPAM-corona and polybasic PDEA cores. Films were constructed at pH 7.5 and 25 degrees C to assure the deposition of PDEA-b-PNIPAM in the micellar form. When monolayers of block copolymer micelles (BCMs) were exposed to moderately acidic pH values, micellar cores dissolved, while PDEA-b-PNIPAM remained adsorbed at the sur...
