A detailed study of the charge spectrum of three-dimensional Abelian Topological Massive Gauge Theory (TMGT) is given. When this theory is defined on a manifold with two disconnected boundaries there are induced chiral Conformal Field Theories (CFT's) on the boundaries which can be interpreted as the left and right sectors of closed strings. We show that Narain constraints on toroidal compactification (integer, even, self-dual momentum lattice) have a natural interpretation in purely three-dimensional terms. This is an important result which is necessary to construct toroidal compactification and heterotic string from Topological Membrane (TM) approach to string theory. We also derive the block structure of c = 1 Rational Conformal Field Theory (RCFT) from the three-dimensional gauge theory.

Compactifications with S-duality twists
Hull, CM; Catal-Ozer, A (2003-10-01)
We consider generalised Scherk Schwarz reductions of supergravity and superstring theories with twists by electromagnetic dualities that are symmetries of the equations of motion but not of the action, such as the S-duality of D=4, N=4 super-Yang-Mills coupled to supergravity. The reduction cannot be done on the action itself, but must be done either on the field equations or on a duality invariant form of the action, such as one in the doubled formalism in which potentials are introduced for both electric ...
Modeling of the nonlinear behavior of steel framed structures with semi rigid connections
Sarıtaş, Afşin; Özel, Halil Fırat (null; 2015-07-21)
A mixed formulation frame finite element with internal semi-rigid connections is presented for the nonlinear analysis of steel structures. Proposed element provides accurate responses for spread of inelasticity along element length by monitoring the nonlinear responses of several crosssections, where spread of inelasticity over each section is captured with fiber discretization. Each material point on the section considers inelastic coupling between normal stress and shear stress. The formulation of the ele...
Holographic renormalization group flow, Wilson loops and field-theory beta-functions
Kogan, II; Schvellinger, M; Tekin, Bayram (2000-11-06)
We study the Renormalization Group (RG) flow of critical bosonic background fields in the framework of the RG approach to string theory. In this approach quantum field theory beta -functions are the extra inputs in solving the string theory sigma-model equations. We study two different situations, the first one is the Yang-Mills theory where the coupling constant diverges in the infrared limit. The second case corresponds to a type of theories where the beta -function has a pole in the infrared limit and it...
Electrically charged vortex solutions in Born-Infeld theory with a Chern-Simons term
Çimşit, Mustafa; İpekoğlu, Yusuf; Department of Physics (2003)
In this thesis, we considered electrically charged vortex solutions of Born- Infeld Chern-Simons gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions, with a sixth order charged scalar eld potential. For this purpose, rst Nielsen-Olesen vortex solutions are extensively reviewed. Then, Born-Infeld and Chern-Simons theories are summarized. Finally, vortex solutions are obtained for the Born-Infeld-Higgs system with a Chern-Simons term. These solutions are analyzed numerically, comparing their properties with Nielsen-Olesen vortices.
Conformal symmetry in field theory
Huyal, Ulaş; Tekin, Bayram; Department of Physics (2011)
In this thesis, conformal transformations in d and two dimensions and the results of conformal symmetry in classical and quantum field theories are reviewed. After investigating the conformal group and its algebra, various aspects of conformal invariance in field theories, like conserved charges, correlation functions and the Ward identities are discussed. The central charge and the Virasoro algebra are briefly touched upon.
