Cosmic tests and performance of the ATLAS SemiConductor tracker barrels

2007-03-01
ATLAS is a multi-purpose particle detector for the LHC and will detect proton collisions with center of mass energy of 14 TeV. Part of the central inner detector, the SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) barrel, is now fully integrated with the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) barrel. The SCT module performance has been measured after module production, after macro-assembly of modules onto barrels, after arrival at CERN and again partially after integration with the TRT. The module noise average per channel has been stable and is 4.5 x 10(-5), well below the design specification of 5 x 10(-4). There is no evidence for common mode noise problems and 99.8% of the 3.2 million channels of the SCT barrels are functional. The cosmics running of the SCT and TRT was the first large scale test of the physics mode of the SCT online software framework. A large sector, 468 SCT modules, has been timed in and read out during the cosmic tests. Tracks have been reconstructed through the SCT and the TRT sectors. Present residuals from tracks (without alignment) are better than the specified building tolerances of the SCT.

Cross section measurement of t-channel single top quark production in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV
Sirunyan, A. M.; et. al. (Elsevier BV, 2017-09-01)
The cross section for the production of single top quarks in the t channel is measured in proton- proton collisions at 13TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.2fb(-1). The event selection requires one muon and two jets where one of the jets is identified as originating from a bottom quark. Several kinematic variables are then combined into a multivariate discriminator to distinguish signal from background events. A fit to the distribution of the ...
Measurement of the differential cross-sections of inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/psi production in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV
Aad, G.; et. al. (Elsevier BV, 2011-09-21)
The inclusive production cross-section and fraction of mesons produced in B-hadron decays are measured in proton–proton collisions at with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of the , using 2.3 pb−1 of integrated luminosity. The cross-section is measured from a minimum of 1 GeV to a maximum of 70 GeV and for rapidities within giving the widest reach of any measurement of production to date. The differential production cross-sections of prompt and non-pr...
Measurement of the inelastic cross section in proton-lead collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV
Khachatryan, V.; et. al. (Elsevier BV, 2016-08-01)
The inelastic hadronic cross section in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV is measured with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of L = 12.6 +/- 0.4 nb(-1), has been collected with an unbiased trigger for inclusive particle production. The cross section is obtained from the measured number of proton-lead collisions with hadronic activity produced in the pseudorapidity ranges 3 < eta < 5 and/or -5 < eta < -3, corre...
Measurement of the centrality dependence of J/psi yields and observation of Z production in lead-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Aad, G.; et. al. (Elsevier BV, 2011-03-14)
Using the ATLAS detector, a centrality-dependent suppression has been observed in the yield of J/psi mesons produced in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of minimum-bias lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre of mass energy root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 6.7 mu b(-1), J/psi mesons are reconstructed via their decays to mu(+)mu(-) pairs. The measured J/psi yield, normalized to the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisio...
Transverse momentum spectra of inclusive b jets in pPb collisions atv root s(NN)=5.02 TeV
Khachatryan, V.; et. al. (Elsevier BV, 2016-03-01)
We present a measurement of b jet transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra in proton-lead (pPb) collisions using a dataset corresponding to about 35nb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Jets from b quark fragmentation are found by exploiting the long lifetime of hadrons containing a b quark through tagging methods using distributions of the secondary vertex mass and displacement. Extracted cross sections for b jets are scaled by the effective number of nucleon-nucleon collisions and are compared to a...
