Industrial applications of solids suspension generally consist of mixed slurries that contain many solid phases with irregularly shaped particles at high concentrations. Since solid-liquid mixing is a power intensive operation it is critical to predict the just suspended speed, N-j(s), accurately. There is only one model available for mixed slurry N-js predictions: the power model. This model was developed for spherical particles. In this study, suspension behaviour of mixed slurries with non-spherical particles was investigated. It was seen that the presence of non-spherical particles decreases N-j(s), but the power model is still applicable. The original limits of applicability of the power model is for spherical particles and up to 27 wt% solids concentration, without networking mechanism. The networking mechanism is seen when the small and less dense particles significantly ease the suspension of larger and denser particles in the slurry. In this study, a correction factor to the power model was recommended to account for the networking mechanism. The power model can now be applied to mixed slurries of any shape of particles up to 55 wt% solids, with or without networking mechanism. The effect of shape was also investigated for unimodal slurries, but no significant deviation was found in the predictions. (C) 2018 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Published by Elsevier B.V. Proquinoidal-Conjugated Polymer as an Effective Strategy for the Enhancement of Electrical Conductivity and Thermoelectric Properties
Tam, Teck Lip Dexter; Ng, Chee Koon; Lim, Siew Lay; Yıldırım, Erol; Ko, Jieun; Leong, Wei Lin; Yang, Shuo-Wang; Xu, Jianwei (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2019-10-22)
P-doping of conjugated polymers requires electron transfer from the conjugated polymer to the p-dopant. This implies that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the conjugated polymer has to be higher than the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the p-dopant. Although commonly used p-dopants such as 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ) have a low LUMO of -5.24 eV, most conjugated polymers used in high-performance field-effect transistors are donor- acceptor-type ...
A Practical Guide to the Preparation of Liquid Crystal-Templated Microparticles
Wang, Xiaoguang; Büküşoğlu, Emre; Abbottt, Nicholas L. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2017-01-10)
We provide a practical guide to methods and protocols that use polymer networks templated from droplets of liquid crystal (LC) to synthesize micrometer-sized polymeric particles that are chemically patchy, are anisometric in shape, possess anisotropic optical properties, and/or are mesoporous. We describe a range of methods that permit the preparation of LC droplets (containing reactive monomers) as templates for polymerization, including formation of LC-in-water emulsions by mechanical methods (e.g., vorte...
Critical analysis of Zwietering correlation for solids suspension in stirred tanks
Ayrancı Tansık, İnci (Elsevier BV, 2014-03-01)
Design specifications for solids suspension (just suspended speed-N-js) in stirred tanks are currently based on the original form of the Zwietering correlation. There are several limitations of this correlation which can lead to poor predictions. The limitations, however, are not clearly defined. In this paper we review the reported limitations of applicability of the Zwietering correlation in detail, and propose ways to predict N-js which extend some of these limits. New data is reported and a detailed ana...
Emulsion filled polysaccharide gels: Filler particle effects on material properties, oral processing, and sensory texture
Koç, Hicran; Drake, MaryAnne; Vinyard, Christopher J.; Essick, Gregory; van de Velde, Fred; Foegeding, E. Allen (Elsevier BV, 2019-09-01)
Addition of filler particles is a common approach to alter food structure and thereby change sensory properties. The goal of this investigation was to determine how filler particles alter oral processing patterns and sensory texture perception of two model food gels with distinct mechanical properties. Agar gels (brittle) and kappa-carrageenan-locust bean gum gels (ductile) were formulated to have similar strength (fracture stress) but different deformability (fracture strain). Increasing the phase volume o...
EVALUATION OF SECOND VIRIAL COEFFICIENTS FROM SATURATION DATA
Orbey, H.; Orbey, N. (Informa UK Limited, 1989-3)
A data reduction technique is introduced for the evaluation of second virial coefficients of gases at subcritical temperatures. The method makes use of the vapor-liquid equilibrium data, i.e., temperature, saturation pressure, liquid and vapor molar volumes and can be used to obtain second virial coefficients of a wide variety of fluids including polar, associating and quantum gases. The calculated second virial coefficients are in good agreement with their counterparts from literature, which are obtained f...
