Transitioning from Physical to Digital Sketchbooks for Industrial Design Education

2015-01-01
An essential element of industrial design education is the project sketchbook, traditionally submitted as a physical (paper-based) portfolio. However, the ability for such sketchbooks to capture design decision-making and project progress made through increasingly digital design tools is ineffective. To help formulate a solution to this problem, the authors undertook a feasibility study to examine opportunities and barriers of transitioning from physical to digital student sketchbooks. Stage 1 of the research classified the content of approximately 50 paper-based student sketchbooks, illuminating the possible content of a digital equivalent. In stage 2, semi-structured interviews were made with five instructors and five students regarding perceived strengths and weaknesses of physical and digital sketchbooks. Stage 3 comprised a technology review, deciding on a system comprising Apple iPad, AluPen stylus, Sketchbook Pro and Dropbox. In stage 4, six students generated digital sketchbooks during a short concept design project, followed by a post-project questionnaire. Major conclusions include: (i) all students appreciated the portability and professional visualization offered by the digital system; (ii) all students resorted at some point back to paper-based sketching, revealing inadequacies in the chosen system; and (iii) considerable training is needed for students to generate a digital sketchbook effectively

The role of of the in-house industrial designer in Turkish industry : perceptions of manufacturers and designers
Süel, Arda Bülben; Hasdoğan, Gülay Fatma; Department of Industrial Design (2006)
The thesis aims to observe the industrial design profession and to study the role of industrial designer in Turkish industry. Through an electronic questionnaire investigating the manufacturers’ and designers’ opinions about how industrial design practice is perceived and how industrial designers are utilized in Turkey it was possible to examine the current roles of industrial designers and to evaluate the status of industrial design profession. The survey also investigated how the industrial designer or th...
Transformation of architectural space with the aid of artistic production
Özden, Başak; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2011)
The goal of this thesis is to study the transformation of architectural space with the aid of artistic production. By questioning architectural production as a non-static process open to alteration and intervention, this condition is claimed to enlarge the frontiers of architecture in terms of interdisciplinary contributions and new design methods. Inspired by the course ARCH 524, conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşen Savaş in the METU Department of Architecture, this study aims to understand the possible way...
Teaching mathematics in architecture
Sorguç, Arzu (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2005-04-01)
The Department of Architecture of Middle East Technical University offers a course entitled ‘Mathematics in Architecture’ for the third year students. In the beginning of the term, students are forced to imagine themselves as twodimensional creatures living in a two-dimensional space. At this point, fundamentals of architectural geometry are introduced first in the plane, simply by employing the set concept; mapping as a general tool is then introduced and students are asked to use mapping in their design t...
Themes of Place and Space in Design Teaching: A Joint Studio Experiment in Amasya
Ulusu Uraz, Türkan; Balamir, Aydan (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2006)
The design studio is a medium of intense learning in architectural education. A learning experiment that engages in critical practice, seeking to present values instead of mere techniques, promoting investigative work rather than trying to bring exact definitions to what must be, is typical of architectural studio education. The choice of a theme around which to structure studio work is significant in this respect; themes define the trajectory and act as filters of perception, thought and action, which the ...
Designing for Multisensorial Interactive Product Experiences
Şener Pedgley, Bahar (2015-09-04)
This paper presents a methodology and case study of designing for multi sensorial interactive product experiences, within the context of postgraduate degree level Industrial Design education. Building on literature spanning product and interaction semantics, and multimodal product experiences, the paper establishes a stepped approach to integrate up to six different sensory modalities (sight, touch, presence, sound, smell, taste) into a user-product interaction scenario. A product design project (bedside al...
