Coal, still considered as one of the primary energy resources worldwide, is mined by utilising large scale equipment both on surface operations and underground mines. Technology has become a fundamental piece of modern mining operations that have to track performance of mining equipment in detail for efficient production. Data generated by mining equipment reached a level where data warehousing could be used for collecting, integrating and analysing data for a data-driven management perspective. The potential of integrated process data of longwall shearers in data warehouses for performance measurement are investigated. Vast amount of data is generated by equipment operated in underground mines that should be used and handled more efficiently in modern mining operations. Data warehousing and business intelligence (BI) tools are introduced to support daily operation of a longwall shearer. It was concluded that data analysis can be improved by utilising integrated data that has more potential to define unit operations in detail. BI tools specifically developed to monitor cutting performance and cycle breakdown should become essential parts of production management and decision making at modern underground coal mines.

Use of Geospatial Queries for Optimum Drilling and Blasting Practices in Surface Mining
Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa (2018-11-22)
Increasing demand of the modern society for energy and raw material strengthens the role of mining in sustainable development. The basic production cycle of surface mining is initiated by drilling and blasting the material that will be loaded, hauled, and dumped by various mobile equipment. Performance measurement and analysis of all these production stages by the utilization of available technology is of crucial importance for continuous improvement of modern mine operations. Today, most of the mobile equi...
Discrete event simulation of a shearer performance for a longwall operation
Yılmaz, Enver; Karpuz, Celal; Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa; Department of Mining Engineering (2018)
Coal is an essential part of energy generation worldwide and has a major role in sustainable development. The amount of coal that can be extracted by surface mining is getting less which makes efficient underground mining operations crucial for both local and global economy. Underground coal mining is considered as a risky industry with a requirement of high amount of equipment investment. The majority of the investment in underground coal mines is generally related with the capital cost of initial equipmen...
Utilization of Yatagan Power Plant Fly Ash in Production of Building Bricks
Önel, Öznur; TANRIVERDİ, MEHMET; ÇİÇEK, TAYFUN (2017-09-15)
Fly ash is a by-product of coal combustion, which accumulates in large quantities near the coal-fired power plants as waste material. Fly ash causes serious operational and environmental problems. In this study, fly ash from Yatagan thermal power plant was used to produce light-weight building bricks. The study aimed to reduce the problems related to fly ash by creating a new area for their use. The optimum process parameters were determined for the production of real size bricks to be used in construction ...
Experimental analysis of adsorption capacities and behaviors of shale samples
Merey, Şükrü; Sınayuç, Çağlar; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2013)
In recent years, unconventional reserves such as shale gas reservoirs have become a major alternative source of energy in the world. It is known that Turkey has shale gas potentials especially in the Southeastern and Thrace region. In shale gas reservoirs, significant amounts of natural gas exist as conventional “free” gas in porous spaces as well as “adsorbed” gas on shale matrix. Understanding adsorption capacities and behaviors of shale gas reservoirs may help exploitation and resource evaluation. In thi...
Review of Trend Tests for Detection of Wear Out Period for Mining Machineries
Gölbaşı, Onur; Demirel, Nuray (2015-04-17)
Machinery systems are extensively utilized in all mining stages from beginning to end of ore production. They are capital-intensive systems and substantial amount of money is spent annually to keep their functionalities in desired levels. Therefore, implementation of effective maintenance strategy has a vital importance to prevent unexpected breakdowns due to failures and to minimize operational cost. These maintenance strategies can be constituted effectively regarding functional and structural dependencie...
