In this project fluid flow and heat transfer in two-dimensional micro channels are studied numerically. A computer code based on Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is developed for this purpose. The code is developed using MATLAB and Jacket software and has the important feature of being able to run parallel on Graphics Processing Units GPU). The code is used to simulate flow and heat transfer inside micro and macro channels. Obtained velocity profiles and Nusselt numbers are compared with the Navier-Stokes based analytical and numerical results available in the literature and good matches are observed. Slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions are used for the micro channel simulations with Knudsen number values covering the slip flow regime. Speed of the parallel version of the developed code running on a GPU is compared with that of t

Analytical solution for single phase microtube heat transfer including axial conduction and viscous dissipation
Barışık, Murat; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
Heat transfer of two-dimensional, hydrodynamically developed, thermally developing, single phase, laminar flow inside a microtube is studied analytically with constant wall temperature thermal boundary condition. The flow is assumed to be incompressible and thermo-physical properties of the fluid are assumed to be constant. Viscous dissipation and the axial conduction are included in the analysis. Rarefaction effect is imposed to the problem via velocity slip and temperature jump boundary conditions for the...

An Exploration of numerical approaches to Boltzmann equation regarding hydrodynamics
Şahin, Alper; Tarman, Işık Hakan; Department of Engineering Sciences (2019)
The Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) has become an alternative tool in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. While traditional CFD methods are based on Navier-Stokes equations that describe the fluid in terms of macroscopic quantities, LBM takes a mesoscopic description of the fluid thus closing the gap between macroscale and microscale. Overall, LBM provides a simple and efficient framework for simulation of fluid flows. In this approach, Boltzmann kinetic equation with BGK collision operator is dis...
Experimental investigation of single phase liquid flow and heat transfer in multiport minichannels
Altınöz, Mesru; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla; Baker, Derek Keıth; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2013)
This thesis aims to experimentally investigate pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of single phase water flow in rectangular minichannels. The small channels are an area of interest in heat transfer field since 1970’s owing to their enhanced heat transfer characteristics. However, the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of these channels are not fully established as there is a wide number of studies in literature showing inconsistent results with each other. In order to investigate t...
TAM GELİŞMİŞ TÜRBÜLANSLI İÇ AKIŞTA KANATÇIKLI YAPILAR ÜZERİNDE ZORLANMIŞ TAŞINIM KORELASYONU ELDESİ: PARAMETRİK DENEYSEL ANALİZ
Bayer, Özgür (2018-04-01)
Bu çalışmada, türbülanslı, tam gelişmiş iç akışta farklı boyutsuz geometrik ölçülere sahip kanatçıklı yapılardan gerçekleşen kararlı rejimdeki ısı transferini belirlemeye yönelik deneysel bir çalışma yürütülmüştür. Geometrik parametrelerin ısı taşınım katsayısı ve Nusselt sayısına etkisi araştırılmıştır. Deneysel veriler işlenerek Reynolds sayısı aralığı, ve boyutsuz geometrik ölçülerin (kanatçıklar arası mesafe/kanatçık kalınlığı), (kanatçık üstü kanal yüksekliği/kanatçık boyu) iken ampirik Nusselt sayıs...
