The pyrrole derivatives having carbonyl groups at the C-2 position were converted to N-propargyl pyrroles. The reaction of those compounds with hydrazine monohydrate resulted in the formation of 5H-pyrrolo[2,1-d][1,2,5]-triazepine derivatives. The synthesis of these compounds was accomplished in three steps starting from pyrrole. On the other hand, attempted cyclization of a pyrrole ester substituted with a propargyl group at the nitrogen atom gave, unexpectedly, the six-membered cyclization product, 2-amino-3-methylpyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazin-1(2H)-one as the major product. The expected cyclization product with a seven-membered ring, 4-methyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[2,1-d][1,2,5]-triazepin-1-one was formed as the minor product and was converted quantitatively to the major product. The formation mechanism of the products was investigated, and the results obtained were also supported by theoretical calculations.

Manganese(iii)acetate-based free-radical additions of -dicarbonyl compounds to bicyclic systems
Fedalla, Mohammad Ali; Balcı, Metin; Department of Chemistry (2007)
Additions of carbon-centered radicals to alkenes are useful method for cyclic compounds formation. Manganese(III)-based oxidative free-radical cyclizations, where the radicals are generated and terminated oxidatively, are established as efficient methods for the construction of cyclic molecule. Treatment of a mixture of dimedone, Mn(OAc)3, and Cu(OAc)2 in glacial acetic acid with homobenzonorbornadiene (80) (4h at 50 C) gave furan derivative (107), dihydrofuran adduct (108), in addition to rearranged produc...
Asymmetric synthesis of N-aryl substituted chiral 1,4-aminoalcohol derivatives and applications in various asymmetric transformation reactions
Odabaş, Serhat; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Department of Chemistry (2007)
The asymmetric synthesis of N-aryl substituted chiral 1,4-aminoalcohols and their applications in asymmetric borane reduction and enantioselective diethylzinc addition to benzaldehyde reactions were performed starting from meso-anhydride 51 that is the cycloadduct of cyclopentadiene and maleic anhydride. The desymmetrization of meso-anhydride 51 was achieved by using quinine or quinidine with very high enantiomeric excess value (up to 98% ee) and with high chemical yield. The quinine-mediated desymmetrizati...
Asymmetric synthesis of norbornene based 1,4-amino alcohol derivatives and applications in asymmetric transformations
Sünbül, Murat; Tanyeli, Cihangir; Department of Chemistry (2005)
The asymmetric synthesis of cis-1,4-aminoalcohols with norbornene backbone was performed starting with simple and cheap anhydride 30. Quinine-mediated desymmetrization of anhydride 30 with methanol resulted in (2S,3R)-(-)-cis-hemiester 31 (98% e.e.). Chemoselective amination with HMPTA and NH4OH followed by LAH reduction afforded (2S,3R)-(+)-36 and (2S,3R)-(-)-37, respectively. The amidoester (2S,3R)-(-)-32 was transformed into chiral ligand (2S,3R)-(-)-35 with Grignard reaction followed by LAH reduction. T...
DFT calculations of pentalenoquinones: towards the interception of 2-bromopentalene-1,5-dione
Atalar, Taner; Algi, Fatih; Balcı, Metin (ARKAT USA, Inc., 2008-01-01)
To reveal the stability and the aromatic character of pentalenoquinones (PQs) 1-4 and the corresponding bromo derivatives (Br-PQs) 6-9, DFT calculations (B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p)) concerning the geometry optimization, total energy and nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) values were performed. It was found that all of the compounds have planar geometry. As the energy difference between HOMO-LUMO energy levels (Delta epsilon=epsilon(LUMO) - epsilon(HOMO)) and total energies were considered for the pentalene f...
Investigation of novel topological indices and their applications in organic chemistry
Gümüş, Selçuk; Türker, Burhan Lemi; Department of Chemistry (2009)
Numerical descriptors, beginning with Wiener, and then named topological indices by Hosoya, have gained gradually increasing importance along with other descriptors for use in QSAR and QSPR studies. Being able to estimate the physical or chemical properties of a yet nonexistent substance as close as possible is very important due to huge consumption of time and money upon direct synthesis. In addition, one may face safety problem as in the case of explosives. There have been almost hundred topological indic...
