Aim: In this epidemiological report, we assessed the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis (OP) in postmenopausal Turkish women and the relationship between body mass index (BMI), and some nutritional factors (habitual tea, coffee, tobacco, and milk product consumption) with OP.

SELF-EFFICACY-BASED SMOKING SITUATION FACTORS - THE EFFECTS OF CONTEMPLATING QUITTING VERSUS RELAPSING IN A TURKISH SAMPLE
Karancı, Ayşe Nuray (Informa UK Limited, 1992-01-01)
The patterning of smoking situations on the basis of self-efficacy expectations among 174 Turkish smokers was examined by factor analysis which yielded five smoking situations. The examination of the effects of relapse versus contemplation to quit showed that contemplators had higher efficacy expectations as compared to noncontemplators, whereas relapse had no significant effect on efficacy beliefs. Least self-efficacy was observed for situations involving affective elements and highest efficacy for habitua...
Vitamin A deficiency induces structural and functional alterations in the molecular constituents of the rat hippocampus
Elibol-Can, Birsen; Simsek-Ozek, Nihal; Severcan, Feride; Severcan, Mete; Jakubowska-Dogru, Ewa (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2015-01-14)
To date, no structural study has been carried out on the effects of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) on hippocampal macromolecules. Therefore, in the present study, the effect of dietary VAD on the structure, content and function of rat hippocampal molecules was investigated using Fourier transform IF spectroscopy. Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: an experimental group maintained on a vitamin A-deficient liquid diet (VAD, n 7); a control group maintained on a vitamin A-supplemented liquid...
Paraoxonase/arylesterase ratio, PON1 192Q/R polymorphism and PON1 status are associated with increased risk of ischernic stroke
Demirdogen, Birsen Can; Turkanoglu, Aysun; Bek, Semai; Sanisoglu, Yavuz; Demirkaya, Seref; Vural, Okay; Arinc, Emel; Adalı, Orhan (Elsevier BV, 2008-01-01)
Objectives: In recent years, importance of enzyme activity measurements, in addition to genotyping, in epidemiological studies relating paraoxonase 1 (PON1) and vascular disease was emphasized. This is the first report evaluating paraoxonase and arylesterase activities as risk factors for ischemic stroke. In addition, PON1 192Gln(Q)/Arg(R) and 55Leu(L)/Met(M) polymorphisms were also analyzed.
Validity and reliability of time management questionnaire
ALAY, SEMA; Koçak, Mehmet Settar (SAGE Publications, 2002-01-01)
the purpose of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the 49-item Diabetes Time Management Questionnaire (DTMQ) in individuals with diabetes. The (DTMQ) was designed to assess general time management skills and those specifically relevant to compliance to a diabetes healthcare regimen.
Gene expressions of Mn-SOD and GPx-1 in streptozotocin-induced diabetes: effect of antioxidants
Sadi, Goekhan; Güray, Nülüfer Tülün (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2009-07-01)
Increased oxidative stress and impaired antioxidant defense mechanisms are believed to be the important factors contributing to the pathogenesis and progression of diabetes mellitus. In this study, we have reported the effects of the streptozotocin-induced diabetes on the gene expression and the activities of two antioxidant enzymes, manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). We also studied the effects of two antioxidants, vitamin C and DL-alpha-lipoic acid (LA), on the system...
