The effects of an edible coating, i.e., Semperfresh (TM), fungicide, i.e., Imazalil, and cold storage on microbial spoilage of cherries were studied. Two group of cherries (Prunus avium) were coated just after harvest with 1% and 2% Semperfresh (TM) fruit coating. Two other group of cherries were treated with 75 ppm and 150 ppm concentrations of Imazalil and then coated with a 1% concentration of Semperfresh (TM) fruit coating. Half of the cherries from each of the above groups was stored at ambient temperature (similar to 30 +/-3 degreesC) and at 40-50% relative humidity, the other half of the cherries was stored at cold storage (0 degreesC) and at 95-98% relative humidity. Each group was analyzed for the mold and yeast count. The Semperfresh (TM) edible coating resulted in a slightly increased fungal spoilage of fruits. Imazalil fungicide treatment clearly decreased and retarded the microbial spoilage of fruits. As a result, low, temperature storage was the most effective solution for both microbial spoilage and delay in the ripening

Effects of an edible coating and cold storage on shelf-life and quality of cherries
Yaman, O; Bayoindirli, L (2002-01-01)
The effects of an edible coating, i.e. Semperfresh(TM) and cold storage on shelf-life and duality of cherries there studied. Taro groups of cherries (Prunus avium) were coated just after harvest with 10 and 20 g/L Semperfresh(TM) fruit coating which is composed of sucrose esters of fatty acids, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and mono-diglycerides of fatty-acids. Half of the cherries from each of the above groups was stored at ambient temperature (similar to30+/-3degreesC) and at 40-50% relative humidity, th...
Effects of edible chitosan coating on quality parameters of pomegranate (punica granatum) arils
Can Çetin, Ayça; Yıldız, Fatih; Bayındırlı, Alev; Department of Food Engineering (2012)
The effects of edible chitosan coating on quality factors of pomegranate (Punica granatum) arils were investigated in the present research. For that purpose, pomegranate arils were treated with 0% (control) and 1% chitosan (extracted from shrimp shells and deacetylated (.75%)) solutions and stored at 4 } 0.5 oC for 22 days. The weight loss, pH, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, total phenolic content, total radical scavenging capacity, total anthocyanin content, total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, t...
EFFECTS OF SUCROSE POLYESTER COATING ON FRUIT-QUALITY OF APRICOTS (PRUNUS-ARMENAICA (L))
Şümnü, Servet Gülüm (Wiley, 1995-04-01)
Mature apricots were coated with different concentrations of a mixture containing sucrose polyesters (Semperfresh(TM) fruit coating) to determine the effect of that coating on shelf-life, post-storage life and quality of apricots. Respiration rates, weight loss, colour change, variations in soluble solids, ascorbic acid content, titratable acidity and pH of apricots were effectively reduced by both the 10 g litre(-1) and 15 g litre(-1) concentrations during ambient storage. After 10 days of cold storage bot...
EFFECTS OF SEMPERFRESH AND JONFRESH FRUIT COATINGS ON POSTSTORAGE QUALITY OF SATSUMA MANDARINS
BAYINDIRLI, L; Şümnü, Servet Gülüm; KAMADAN, K (Wiley, 1995-11-01)
Mandarins were coated with SemperSresh(TM) and Jonfresh(TM) edible coatings. The weight gain of mandarins after application of Jonfresh and Semperfresh coatings was 0.8% and 0.6% respectively. Weight loss, respiration rate, ascorbic acid, soluble solids (brix) and acidity changes of coated mandarins were compared with uncoated mandarins during storage at 20C and 40% RH for 4 weeks. Semperfresh(TM) and Jonfresh(TM) coatings delayed the ripening of mandarins. Both of the coatings were effective to reduce the ...
EFFECTS OF SEMPERFRESH(TM) AND JOHNFRESH(TM) FRUIT COATINGS ON POSTSTORAGE QUALITY OF ANKARA PEARS
Şümnü, Servet Gülüm (Wiley, 1994-08-01)
Pears were coated with different concentrations of Semperfresh or with Johnfresh edible coatings after storage for five months at 0C to determine the effects of coatings on poststorage quality. Coating levels were effective for extending the poststorage life and delaying ripening. Both Semperfresh and Johnfresh treated pears had better color, firmness, ascorbic acid, titratable acidity, soluble solid retention than control pears. Although Semperfresh was effective for the reduction of respiration and weight...
