The Modular Multilevel Converter (M2C) has become the preferred topology for use in high power applications in recent years. This paper gives guiding information for M2C design, in terms of carrier-based PWM methods. Phase and level shift methods are considered. The enhancement due to zero sequence signal injection is also quantified. It is found that output voltage characteristics are highly dependent on the PWM method used. Therefore, selection of the switching method is a critical design issue in M2C studies. Performance evaluation and comparisons are based on Matlab generated switching pulse patterns and the results are validated by computer simulations.

This paper thoroughly examines the semiconductor power loss characteristics of modular multilevel converters (MMC). Power loss behavior is examined under different pulse width modulation (PWM) methods and operating conditions. The effects of stored energy level, circulating current control utilization, power factor and submodule voltage balancing method on power loss are studied. Furthermore, unbalanced power losses and specific semiconductor stresses within a submodule are visualized by investigating the l...

The thesis focuses on the determination of suitable carrier based PWM switching and control method for modular multilevel converter drives. Characterization of various level-shifted and phase-shifted carrier based PWM methods are provided in terms of switching pulse patterns and resultant voltage waveforms both for N+1 and 2N+1 level output phase voltages. Modular multilevel converter PWM based control approaches are evaluated. Performances of different control methods are given for output harmonics distort...
Waveform Quality Comparison of Scalar PWM Methods for Modular Multilevel Converters
Ciftci, Baris; Hava, Ahmet Masum (2013-11-30)
Modular Multilevel Converter (M2C) is the preferential topology used for high power applications in the recent years. Its high quality of output waveforms and high efficiency make it a powerful alternative to conventional two level converters. This paper gives an output waveform quality comparison of scalar PWM methods, used for M2C switching. It is found that output voltage characteristics are highly dependent on the PWM method used. Therefore, selection of the switching method is an important design issue...
Selection of light source and implementation of data acquisition system of an optical experimental setup
Reyhanioğlu, Erinç; Öke, Gülay; Department of Physics (2004)
The construction of an optical experimental setup is the objective, to measure transmission coefficient of optical components used in plasma investigations. Thus, proper light source either with continuous or line radiation spectrum should be used. In addition, the detectors̕ output signal is recorded on a PC based data recorder after being digitized by an analog to digital converter card.
