Suction-swelling relations

2000-12-01
In this paper, thermocouple psychrometric technique is used to measure soil suction and reliability of swell percentage prediction method based on soil suction data is evaluated. Kaolinite-bentonite clay mixtures were prepared to obtain expansive soils in a wide range of plasticity indices. Suction measurements using thermocouple psychrometer technique and free swell tests in oedometers were made on statically compacted specimens. Soil suction-water content relationships were evaluated. The results indicated a linear relationship between log suction and swell percentage measured in oedometer. It has been shown that the predicted swell percentages by using suction test results underestimate the ultimate swell percentages in oedometer free swell tests.

Comparison of suction and oedometer methods for the measurement of swell pressure
Cokca, E (Geological Society of London, 2000-05-01)
In this paper, a thermocouple psychrometric technique is used to measure soil suction and assess the reliability of a swell pressure prediction method. Kaolinite-bentonite clay mixtures were prepared to obtain expansive soils with a wide range of plasticities. Suction measurements using thermocouple psychrometers and constant volume swell tests in oedometers were made on statically compacted :specimens. Soil suction-water content relationships were evaluated. The results indicate a linear relationship betwe...
Singularly perturbed diffusion-advection-reaction processes on extremely large three-dimensional curvilinear networks with a periodic microstructure -- efficient solution strategies based on homogenization theory
Kropat, Erik; Meyer-Nieberg, Silja; Weber, Gerhard-Wilhelm (American Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), 2016-8)
Boundary value problems on large periodic networks arise in many applications such as soil mechanics in geophysics or the analysis of photonic crystals in nanotechnology. As a model example, singularly perturbed elliptic differential equations of second order are addressed. Typically, the length of periodicity is very small compared to the size of the covered region. The overall complexity of the networks raises serious problems on the computational side. The high density of the graph, the huge number of ed...
Dynamic response analysis of the machine foundations on a nonhomogeneous soil layer
Aşık, Mehmet Zülfü (1999-01-01)
Real modulus of elasticity of the soil usually increases with the depth of the soil due to the increase in overburden pressure. Therefore, incorporation of the effect of the soil inhomogeneity in the formulation to obtain the response of the machine foundations is an important and a necessary step. In this paper, equations that govern the dynamic behavior of the machine foundations and consider the inhomogeneity of the elastic foundation, particularly for Gibson type soil are derived by using variational pr...
Calorific value determination of coals by DTA and ASTM methods. Comparative study
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2001-08-20)
This research comprises the applicability of complex thermal analysis technique (TG/DTG, DTA) in the determination of calorific values of coals of different origin. The calorific values, those obtained by thermal analysis are compared with an adiabatic bomb calorimeter by the standard ASTM method, and the results are discussed.
Exponential Equation for Predicting Shear Strength Envelope of Unsaturated Soils
Ahmadi Naghadeh, Reza; Toker, Nabi Kartal (2019-07-01)
An exponential equation is introduced to predict the nonlinear variation of shear strength with matric suction for unsaturated soils. The proposed equation involves three constant parameters, two of which are effective shear strength parameters (i.e., phi ' and c '). The third parameter is the maximum capillary cohesion, c '' max, which is the maximum possible increase in shear strength due to matric suction. A procedure for the determination of c '' max from the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is de...
