Evaluation of cotton stalk hydrolysate for xylitol production
Sapci, Burcu; AKPINAR, ÖZLEM; Bolukbasi, Ufuk; Yılmaz, Levent (2016-01-01)
Cotton stalk is a widely distributed and abundant lignocellulosic waste found in Turkey. Because of its rich xylose content, it can be a promising source for the production of xylitol. Xylitol can be produced by chemical or biotechnological methods. Because the biotechnological method is a simple process with great substrate specificity and low energy requirements, it is more of an economic alternative for the xylitol production. This study aimed to use cotton stalk for the production of xylitol with Candid...

Evaluation of highly unsaturated oleogels as shortening replacer in a short dough product
Mert, Behiç (2016-05-01)
Cookie is a baked product with significant amount of fat and the development of well aerated short dough is the initial step for preparation of cookies with commonly accepted textural properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential application of two different oleogels that contain Carnauba wax (CRW) and Candelilla wax (CDW) to replace shortening in cookie. Incorporation 2.5 g/100 g and 5 g/100 g wax into sunflower oil (SFO) resulted in self-standing oleogels of which rheological ch...

Evaluation of high hydrostatic pressure effects on bovine red blood cells and platelets
Ceylan, Cagatay; Severcan, Mete; Bozoglu, Faruk; Severcan, Feride (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) on the stability of red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets. Bovine blood cells (n=5) were treated with the pressure of 55, 110, 154 and 220MPa at 25C for 5min. Light microscopy, atomic force microscopy and flow cytometry studies revealed that RBCs were morphologically stable up until the 220MPa pressure treatments, at which surface modifications were observed. The platelets were found to be less stable than RBCs. HHP...
