This paper is based on a nation wide research project carried out with the aim of investigating diggability, drillability and blastability of overburden strata in many producing surface coal mines in Tuerkiye. It reports data on blasting practice derived from various case studies. Correlation of powder factors used for overburden preparation with physical properties of many different types of rock masses were investigated. The correlations observed between powder factor and uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, density and P-wave velocity are very satisfactory. The use of Rock Quality Index derived from monitoring of blasthole drill performance for estimating powder factor has been found to be very promising tool for planning and execution of blasting operations in surface coal mines.

Estimation of Hardgrove grindability index of Turkish coals by neural networks
Ozbayoglu, Gulhan; ÖZBAYOĞLU, AHMET MURAT; Ozbayoglu, M. Evren (Elsevier BV, 2008-01-31)
In this research, different techniques for the estimation of coal HGI values are studied. Data from 163 sub-bituminous coals from Turkey are used by featuring I I coal parameters, which include proximate analysis, group maceral analysis and rank. Nonlinear regression and neural network techniques are used for predicting the HGI values for the specified coal parameters. Results indicate that a hybrid network which is a combination of 4 separate neural networks gave the most accurate HGI prediction and all of...
Preparation of clay-polymer nanocomposite for the retardation of waste water infiltration in landfill sites
Bildiren, Mert; Günal Türkmenoğlu, Asuman; Department of Geological Engineering (2007)
In this thesis study, the use of clay-polymer nanocomposites for their applicability in landfill sites as a product of retardation of waste water infiltration was evaluated. For this purpose, organophilic clays from HDTMA+ organic cation and nanocomposites of montmorillonite were prepared. The bentonite samples B1, B2 and B3 dominantly contain 2:1 layer montmorillonite and 1:1 interstratification of illite/smectite mixed layer as clay minerals. B1 is an unmodified yellow bentonite and B2 is a grey bentonite...
Strength of various sands in triaxial and cyclic direct shear tests
ÇABALAR, ALİ FIRAT; Dulundu, Kemal; Tuncay, Kağan (Elsevier BV, 2013-04-01)
This paper presents the result of an extensive series of experimental investigation carried out in triaxial and cyclic direct shear tests on sands having various properties, which were obtained from different locations in Turkey and in Northern Cyprus. In order to investigate the link between strength and physical properties (i.e., shape) of the sand particles, three series of triaxial tests (Consolidated-Drained, CD; Consolidated-Undrained, CU; and Unconsolidated-Undrained, UU) for each were performed unde...
Effect of recycled cement concrete content on rutting behavior of asphalt concrete
Gul , Waqar Ahmed; Güler, Murat; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
Disposed waste materials remained from demolished buildings have been an environmental problem especially for developing countries. Recycled Cement Concrete (RCC) is one of the abundant components of waste materials that include quality aggregates. Use of RCC in asphalt concrete pavements is economically a feasible option as it not only helps in recycling waste materials but also preserves natural resources by fulfilling the demand for quality aggregate in pavement constructions. However, due to variability...
Comparison of iscst3 and aermod air dispersion models: case study of cayirhan thermal power plant
Dölek, Emre; Atımtay, Aysel; Department of Environmental Engineering (2007)
In this study, emission inventory was prepared and pollutant dispersion studies were carried out for the area around Çayırhan Thermal Power Plant to determine the effects of the plant on the environment. Stack gas measurement results were used for the emissions from the power plant and emission factors were used for calculating the emissions from residential sources and coal stockpiles in the study region. Ground level concentrations of SO2, NOx and PM10 were estimated by using EPA approved dispersion model...
