The kinetics of batch dry grinding of binary mixtures of ceramic raw materials, namely quartz-kaolin, quartz-potassium feldspar and kaolin-potassium feldspar, from the feed sizes of -3.350 + 2.360, -2.000 + 1.400, -0.850 + 0.600, -0.500 + 0.355 and -0.300 + 0.212 mm have been determined using a Bond mill with a mixture of ball sizes of 38.10, 31.75, 25.40, 19.05 and 12.70 mm diameter and total mass of 22.648 kg. The Bond mill used was a size of 30.5 cm diameter, 30.5 cm length, with a total volume of 22,272 cm(3). The fractional ball filling was 22% of mill volume and the mill speed was 70 rpm. The breakage parameters were obtained for those mineral mixtures to predict the product size distributions. As the feed sized given above, which were ground in the mill, increase, the specific rate of breakage (S-i) values also increase, which means faster breakage with higher Si value occurs in the order of quartz-kaolin, quartz-potassium feldspar and kaolin-potassium feldspar mixtures when comparing the characteristic alpha values (slope of S-i versus size relationship with higher alpha value). The cumulative breakage distribution function (B-ij) values obtained for these mineral mixtures were slightly different in terms of the fineness factor, gamma. This means that quartz-potassium feldspar mixture produced less fines with higher gamma value, while kaolin-potassium feldspar gave more fines with lower gamma value. The simulations of the product size distribution for these mixing were very close to the experimental data. Finally, slowing down effect, treated with false time concept, started earlier than the expected for these binary mixtures. There were some correlations found between the simulated time (theta) and experimental time (t). (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of PZT ceramics doped with strontium and lanthanum
Kalem, Volkan; Çam, İbrahim; Timucin, Muharrem (Elsevier BV, 2011-05-01)
PZT based piezoelectric ceramics obtained by doping with various levels of Sr2+ and La3+, designated as PSLZT, were prepared by conventional processing techniques. The effects of Sr2+ and La3+ additions, and that of the Zr/Ti ratio on microstructure, on phase constitution, and on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. XRD data revealed that all PSLZT compositions had perovskite structure in which increasing Sr and/or decreasing Zr/Ti ratio increased the tetragonality. In PSLZT cerami...
Solid-state synthesis and X-ray diffraction studies of Na2S
Kizilyalli, M.; Bilgin, M.; Kizilyalli, H.M. (Elsevier BV, 1990-4)
Na2S was synthesized by a new solid-gas reaction of Na2CO3 with a sulfidizing gas mixture and a solid-solid reaction of carbon with Na2SO4. The reaction products were analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction and IR methods. Two new crystal modifications of Na2S were identified in addition to the previously reported antifluorite structure. They were designated as cubic Form II and orthorhombic Form III. The approximate unit cell dimensions were found to be a = 11.29 Å for the cubic form and a = 15.94, b = 16.00,...
Catalytic effect of alkaline earth oxides on carbothermic formation of hexagonal boron nitride
ÇAMURLU, HASAN ERDEM; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali; SEVİNÇ, NACİ (Elsevier BV, 2009-08-01)
Effect of MgO, CaO and BaO on carbothermic formation of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was investigated. B(2)O(3-)C mixtures containing alkaline earth oxide additives were reacted at 1500 degrees C for 30-120 min in nitrogen atmosphere. Formed phases in the reaction products were determined by powder-XRD analyses, and amounts of the constituents were determined by chemical analyses. Particle size and morphology of the formed h-BN powders were examined by FESEM and particle size distributions were determined...
Production and properties of tooth-colored yttria stabilized zirconia ceramics for dental applications
Kaplan, Melis; PARK, JONGEE; Kim, Soo Young; Öztürk, Abdullah (Elsevier BV, 2018-02-01)
Dense zirconia stabilized with 3 mol% yttria ceramics were produced in disc shape by first cold isostatically pressing at 100 MPa and then sintering at 1450 degrees C at ambient laboratory conditions. Coloring was accomplished by immersion the discs in NiCl2, MoCl3, and NiCl2 + MoCl3 solutions for 5, 30, and 60 s. Different concentrations (0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 wt%) were applied to get the color of natural tooth. The density, color, microhardness, fracture toughness, compressive strength, and wear rate of the ...
Improvements in microstructural, mechanical, and biocompatibility properties of nano-sized hydroxyapatites doped with yttrium and fluoride
BAŞAR, Burcin; Tezcaner, Ayşen; Keskin, Dilek; Evis, Zafer (Elsevier BV, 2010-07-01)
Hydroxyapatite was doped with Y3+ (2.5, 5 and 7.5 mol%) and F (2.5 mol%) ions (2.5YFHA, 5YFHA, 7.5YFHA, respectively) to compare its structural and mechanical properties and cellular response with pure-hydroxyapatite. No second phases were observed by X-ray diffraction spectra of 2.5YFHA. Doped hydroxyapatites had F- bonds in addition to OH- bonds. Hydroxyapatites sintered at 900 and 1100 degrees C were in nano-size. 7.5YFHA sintered at 1300 degrees C had the highest microhardness value. 2.5YFHA sintered at...
