With pressures to improve energy efficiency in mining, reducing energy usage in comminution has become the focus of innovation. Several advances have been made however the uptake of innovations and technologies is slow. A Technology Readiness Level guide has been developed for other industries that may be a useful tool for the mining industry. Examination of selected successful energy efficient technologies provides some insights and lessons that may provide direction for advancing new technologies. This paper presents the present state and future opportunities for innovation to reduce energy usage for comminution. The main focus will be in relation to pathways to shorten the timelines to advance technologies through stages of readiness for commercialization for the risk averse mining industry.

Energy efficiency perspectives of femtocells in internet of things: recent advances and challenges
Al-Turjman, Fadi M.; Imran, Muhammad; Bakhsh, Sheikh Tahir (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017)
Energy efficiency is a growing concern in every aspect of the technology. Apart from maintaining profitability, energy efficiency means a decrease in the overall environmental effects, which is a serious concern in today's world. Using a femtocell in Internet of Things (IoT) can boost energy efficiency. To illustrate, femtocells can be used in smart homes, which is a subpart of the smart grid, as a communication mechanism in order to manage energy efficiency. Moreover, femtocells can be used in many IoT app...
Analytical Modelling, Simulation and Comparative Study of Multi-Junction Solar Cells Efficiency
Hadjdida, Abdelkader; Bourahla, Mohamed; Ertan, Hulusi Bülent; Bekhti, Mohamed (2018-12-01)
Currently, solar energy is promising the primary source of renewable energy that has a great potential to generate power for an extremely low operating cost when compared to already existing power generation technologies. Increasing the efficiency of solar cells is a major goal and the prominent factor in photovoltaic system research. Current triple junction solar cells reach 30% and the next generation will bring 35% in 5 years to peak at 40%. These cells are used in space environment and in terrestrial sy...
Smart grid applications and technologies in distribution systems
Pehlivanoğlu Gürbüz, Kübra; Sevaioğlu, Osman; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2019)
Smart grid control purposes to rise the percentage of energy production through alternative energy sources like renewable resources and to make consumers to be comprehended in grid actively, is realising importance day by day. Further to that it can help us employment opportunities and improving growth in addition to keep the power on at minimum cost to prosumers, while the participation is elucidated and enabled new products, service and markets, accommodating all generation and storage options and provide...
Assessment of renewable energy based micro-grids for small communities
Sadati, S.M. Sajed; Taylan, Onur; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2016-7)
Deploying renewable energy systems to supply electricity faces many challenges related to cost and variability of the renewable resources. One possible solution to these challenges is to hybridize renewable energy systems with conventional power systems and include energy storage systems. In this study, the feasibility analysis of two cases for electricity generation systems as (i) photovoltaic (PV)-battery-pumped hydro system (PHS) and (ii) PV-wind-battery are presented as a Renewable Energy Micro-Gr...
Steam Reforming of ethanol over sol-gel-synthesized mixed oxide catalysts
Olcay, Hakan Önder; Üner, Deniz; Department of Chemical Engineering (2005)
Depletion in the reserves of fossil fuels, inefficient energy production from these fuels and the negative effect of their usage on atmosphere, and thereby, on human health have accelerated researches on clean energy. Hydrogen produced from ethanol when used in fuel cells not only generates efficient energy but also creates a closed carbon cycle in nature. ZnO and Cu/ZnO catalysts are known with their superior performance in alcohol synthesis. From the principle of microkinetic reversibility they are expect...
