A new expression has been developed for prediction of the optimal fin spacing for vertical rectangular fins protruding from a vertical rectangular base. This expression was determined using the results of experimental investigation available in the literature over a wide range of test variables. Data collated from literature covered the range of fin spacing from 2.85 mm to 85.5 mm. The range of basc-to-ambient temperature difference was quite extensive, from 14 degrees C to 162 degrees C. The fin length range was from 100 mm to 500 mm. the fin height from 5 mm to 90 mm, the fin thickness from 1 mm to 19 mm, the width of rectangular base plate from 180 mm to 250 mm. Its dimensionless parameters were formulated by the intersection of asymptotes method proposed in (Yildiz, and Yuncu, 2004). These dimensionless parameters correlate the experimental data of seven investigators. The expression resulting from this correlation predicted the experimental data within an average overall error of less then 24 percent.

Numerical investigation of natural convection from vertical plate finned heat sinks
Çakar, Kamil Mert; Albayrak, Kahraman; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
The steady-state natural convection from vertically placed rectangular fins is investigated numerically by means of a commercial CFD program called ICEPAK. The effects of geometric parameters of fin arrays on the performance of heat dissipation from fin arrays are examined. In order to simulate the different fin configurations and compare the results with literature, two experimental studies from literature are selected. Optimum fin spacing for both studies are found numerically and compared with experiment...
Natural convection heat transfer from inclined plate-fin heat sinks
Tarı, İlker (2013-01-01)
The steady-state natural convection from heat sinks with parallel arrangement of rectangular cross section vertical plate fins on a vertical base are numerically investigated in order to obtain a validated model that is used for investigating inclined orientations of a heat sink. Taking a previous experimental study as a basis, aluminum heat sinks with two different practical lengths are modeled. The models and the simulation approach are validated by comparing the flat plate heat sink results with the avai...
A correlation for natural convection heat transfer from inclined plate-finned heat sinks
MEHRTASH, Mehdi; Tarı, İlker (2013-03-01)
Steady-state natural convection heat transfer from inclined plate-finned heat sinks to air is numerically investigated by using an experimentally validated model. The heat sinks with parallel arrangement of uniform rectangular cross section plate fins are inclined from the vertical in both forward and backward directions in order to investigate the effect of inclination on convection. Our previously validated numerical model for vertically oriented heat sinks is directly used without changing any model para...
Stabilizing subgrid FEM solution of the natural convection flow under high magnitude magnetic field on sinusoidal corrugated enclosure
Aydın, S. H.; Tezer, Münevver (Informa UK Limited, 2019-7-7)
This study deals with the stabilized finite element solution of the steady, natural convection flow in an enclosure under a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the sinusoidal corrugated vertical walls of the enclosure, in terms of primitive variables. Several vertical sinusoidal functions are selected for the comparison. A stabilized FEM scheme called SSM is proposed in order to obtain a stable solution for the high values of problem parameters with a cheap computational cost. Proposed numerical scheme ...
A three dimensional numerical study on natural convection heat transfer from short horizontal rectangular fin array
Mobedi, M; Yüncü, Hafit (2003-05-01)
Steady state natural convection heat transfer in a longitudinally short rectangular fin array on a horizontal base is numerically investigated. The problem is three dimensional laminar natural convection heat transfer with open boundaries. A finite difference code based on vorticity-vector potential approach is developed to solve the governing equations. The steady behaviour of the flow and temperature distributions is obtained from the solution of transient form of the governing equations. Results are comp...
