Flocculation behavior of two clay rock samples with different dolomite and clay mineral (smectite) contents was examined using a non-conventional, medium-anionic polyacrylamide-based flocculant in borax solutions. The samples were representative of two major types of gangue material discarded from the borax processing plant at Kirka/Turkey as borax-saturated tailings stream which present serious disposal problems from technical and environmental points of view. The effect of the dissolved borax concentration by itself, and the effects of Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions at a constant borax concentration of 3% w/v were investigated with dispersions flocculated at the buffered pH 9.4. Flocculation efficiency was mainly assessed by the supernatant turbidity. Increasing the borax concentration decreased the supernatant turbidity. The effect was attributed to the reduced negative electric field around the dolomite and clay mineral particles due to the high ionic strength and the adsorption of sodium cations on the surfaces of the clay mineral particles, facilitating the hydrogen bonding of the amide groups of the flocculant. Ca2+ ions were essential for improving the floc formation and obtaining clear supernatants, but Mg2+ ions were detrimental to floc formation and turbidity removal. Positively-charged adsorbed calcium-hydroxo species on the particles should have promoted stronger salt linkages with the negative pendant groups of the flocculant The adverse effect of Mg2+ was attributed to its higher hydration energy and the likely precipitation of Mg(OH)(2) on particle surfaces. FTIR studies provided some supporting evidence for the suggested mechanisms of flocculant adsorption.

Geotechnical evaluation of Ankara clay as a compacted clay liner
Met, Ilker; Akgün, Haluk (2015-08-01)
This study investigates the geotechnical properties, and mineralogical and permeability characteristics of "Ankara clay" to evaluate its suitability as a compacted clay landfill liner material. The geotechnical index properties of the clayey soil samples collected from the western part of Ankara were determined. All the soil samples were tested for permeability by means of falling head compaction permeameter apparatus. The mineralogy of the soil samples were examined by X-ray diffraction and scanning electr...
Mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester/montmorillonite composites
Inceoglu, AB; Yılmazer, Ülkü (2001-11-29)
Nanocomposites composed of unsaturated polyester matrix and organically modified clay filler were prepared. After the synthesis, XRD patterns showed that the interlayer spacing expanded from 1.25 nm to 4.5 nm. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were determined and it was found that adding only 3 w/w % organically modified clay improved the flexural modulus of unsaturated polyester by 35%. From DSC diagrams, it was found that T-g values of the nanocomposites also increased with the clay content....
Electroacoustic measurements of mixed quartz and iron oxide mineral systems
Klein, B; Altun, Naci Emre; Colebrook, M; Pawlik, M (2012-07-18)
Surface behavior of the commonly found minerals in nickel laterite ores - quartz, magnetite, hematite and goethite was investigated using electroacoustic measurements. The goal was to assess the surface potentials as single minerals and in mixed systems to understand possible interactions between particles in laterite slurries. Surface potentials were evaluated according to the electroacoustic theory with the understanding that a direct relationship existed between zeta potential and electroacoustic sonic a...
Physical and mechanical properties of lightweight expanded clay aggregate concrete
Uysal, Orkun; Yaman, İsmail Özgür; Aktaş, Can Baran; Department of Civil Engineering (2023-1-27)
Expanded clay aggregate is an artificial type of aggregate manufactured from clay, and it has a porous nature, making it lighter than normal weight aggregates. When used in concrete, this porous nature is decisive in the physical and mechanical properties of concrete. A comprehensive experimental study was carried out on physical and mechanical properties like density, absorption capacity, porosity, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity. In this context, 13 different mi...
Cyclic behavior of Adapazarı silt and clay mixtures
Pekcan, Onur; Çetin, Kemal Önder; Bakır, Bahadır Sadık (null; 2004-01-07)
Within the confines of this paper, it is intended to understand cyclic behavior of clayey silt and silty clay mixtures, sampled from Adapazarı–Turkey. For this purpose, series of cyclic triaxial tests were performed on the samples retrieved from five selected soil sites, where buildings founded on these soils exhibited significant foundation displacements. After consolidating samples to 0.50 atm. cyclic loads were applied to simulate 1999 Kocaeli-Turkey earthquake shaking. Volumetric strains were recorded b...
