In the recent years, traffic incidents sharply increase in Turkey. Although traffic regulations strictly applied in Middle East Technical University Campus (METU), Ankara, Turkey, this increasing trend also present in the campus. To prevent traffic incidents, it is crucial to understand where and how they take place, the relations among the incidents, and the locations. The aim of this study is to make a traffic pattern analysis concerning time and locations within METU Campus using spatial data analysis tools. The study aims at answering whether there are any locations which show clustering in the distribution of traffic incidents and there are any changes in the distribution of traffic events for different seasons, days and time periods. In the existing system the events are recorded by gendarmerie and there is no tabular or visual database for the events. Concerning such a need METU Campus is selected to create a traffic incident database and analyze the pattern of incidents. The Traffic incidents are analyzed with both point and areal data analysis for determining whether there is regularity or clustering in the data. The incidents on road are used in the kernel density estimation with network distances along the road network. Nearest Neighbor Distance and the K-function exploration methods have been applied to determine the spatial relation in terms of distance between the incident locations. The results of different methods are compared with each other in order to identify the hot spot zones on roads. The results showed that there are clustering in the traffic incidents and the number of incidents changes by season, day and week. The results could be used as a tool for the management of the traffic system within the METU Campus for improving the traffic safety. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Identification of traffic accident hot spots and their characteristics in urban area by using GIS
Kundakçı, Ezgi; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2014)
A major problem in the world and in Turkey is traffic accidents and consequent loss of life or property. In addition to the literature on highway black spots, it is necessary to identify urban locations with high traffic accident occurrence rates in order to shed light to underlying problems and develop preventive measures.Despite the more strict black spot definition for highways, accident prone locations in urban areas are regarded as hot spots, which can be simply defined as clusters representing dense a...
The Determinants of posttraumatic growth and posttraumatic stress among motor vehicle accident survivors: personality, coping mechanisms, and ruminations
Çağlayan, Pınar; Karancı, Ayşe Nuray; Department of Psychology (2016)
The experience of traffic accidents is a quite frequent adversity, especially in Turkey. Although traumatic events result in negative psychological consequences, their positive outcomes have also been examined in psychology literature. The current study aimed to examine negative and positive consequences, namely posttraumatic stress (PTS) and growth (PTG) of traffic accident survivors in Turkey. Factors related to PTS and PTG were examined based on the Multivariate Risk Factor Model and Model of Life Crises...
Assessment of slope stability in Ankara clay: a case study along E90 highway
Teoman, MB; Topal, Tamer; Isik, NS (2004-05-01)
Some slope instability problems exist in Ankara clay along E90 highway. The purpose of this paper is to determine the mineralogical and geotechnical properties of soils, and to investigate the causes and mechanisms of three rotational landslides along a section of the highway. In order to accomplish these tasks, field studies, laboratory testing, back analyses, and limit equilibrium and finite difference analyses were performed. The landslides are formed within a soil consisting of clay and silt with a litt...
Does Traffic Safety Climate Perception of Drivers Differ Depending on Their Traffic System Resilience and Driving Skills Evaluation?
GÜNER, Gizem; TÜMER, Ece; Öztürk, İbrahim; Öz, Bahar (2018-08-30)
Road traffic accidents are one of the most important public health problems in Turkey and all over the world. Traffic system involves many agents from a micro level, such as drivers, to a macro level, such as traffic climate. Traffic system resilience and driving skills are crucial factors that determine the road traffic accidents and their outcomes; in addition to being related to the development of sustainable and safer road traffic system. In this study, it is aimed to investigate group differences deriv...
Investigation of Wind Effects on Tall Buildings through Wind Tunnel Testing
Kurç, Özgür; Shojaee, S. M. Nima; Uzol, Oğuz (2012-10-01)
There has been significant increase in tall building construction in Turkey in the last decade. As the height of building increase, wind effects become more pronounced. Wind can interact with flexible buildings and can significantly magnify the wind loads and wind induced oscillations. Wind tunnel tests have been widely utilized for estimating the wind effects on buildings. In order to perform a successful test, however, flow conditions inside the tunnel must represent the actual conditions rather closely. ...
