The bromination reaction of p-benzoquinone-fused norbornadiene was studied at various temperatures (-78, 50, 0, 25, and 77 degrees C). At room temperature, the double bonds of the p-benzoquinone units were mainly brominated. The double bond of the norbornene unit also underwent a bromination reaction in a yield of only 2%. However, the reaction at -78 degrees C resulted in the formation of products derived from the attack of bromine on the norbornene double bond with higher charge density. In contrast to the bromination reaction, the epoxidation reaction of the same compound with m-chloroperbenzoic acid and dimethyldioxirane exclusively resulted in the formation of products derived from the addition to the double bond of norbornadiene. The regioselectivity observed was investigated and the results were supported by theoretical calculations.

Thermal and chemical inactivation of lactococcal bacteriophages
BUZRUL, Sencer; OZTURK, Pinar; Alpas, Hami; AKÇELİK, Mustafa (Elsevier BV, 2007-01-01)
Ten lactococcal bacteriophages in M 17 broth were treated by heat (72 degrees C, 15 min and 90 degrees C, 5 min), ethanol and isopropanol at concentrations of 10%, 50%. 75% and 100% (v/v). The heat treatments were not sufficient to inactivate all the bacteriophages studied whereas ethanol, which was also more efficient biocide than isopropanol, at a concentration of 75% could inactivate all the phages in I min. The 50% and 75% of ethanol were more effective than 100%, which was also observed for isopropanol...
Use of Weibull frequency distribution model to describe the inactivation of Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris by high pressure at different temperatures
BUZRUL, SENCER; Alpas, Hami; Bozoglu, F (Elsevier BV, 2005-01-01)
The survival curves of Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris by high hydrostatic pressure were obtained at two pressures (350 and 450 MPa) and three temperature levels (35, 45 and 50 degreesC) in BAM broth. Tailing (upward concavity) was observed in all survival curves. Weibull model was fitted to these data and goodness of fit of this model was investigated. Regression coefficients (R-2), root mean square (RMSE) values and residual plot strongly suggested that Weibull model produced good fit to the data. A bett...
Analysis of the specific heat of p-azoxyanisole (PAA) near the phase transitions
Kilit, E.; Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit (Informa UK Limited, 2010-01-01)
The analysis of the experimental data for the specific heat Cp at various temperatures is given here near the nematic-isotropic liquid (TNI = 133.9 degrees C) and the solid-nematic (TSN = 117.6 degrees C) transitions in p-azoxyanisole (PAA). The analysis of the specific heat Cp is performed according to a simple power-law formula and a renormalisation-group expression. The values of the critical exponent are extracted above and below the transition temperatures of TNI and TSN for this liquid crystalline mat...
KINETIC COMPENSATION DURING HOMOGENEOUS AND HETEROGENEOUS NUCLEATION OF ICE IN AQUEOUS SYSTEMS
OZILGEN, S; OZILGEN, M; REID, DS (Elsevier BV, 1994-01-01)
Homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation rates of ice in aqueous systems are described in the literature with the equation J = A exp (B tau). There are a very large number of published data available for variation of the constants A and B with experimental conditions. Results of this study show that the parameters obtained in the experiments with differential scanning calorimeter and the microscopic technique may be described separately with an empirical compensation equation of the form In A = aB + b. The ...
Changes in the physicochemical properties of high pressure treated rainbow trout
Erkan, Nuray; Alpas, Hami; Uretener, Gonca; Selcuk, Arif; Buzrul, Sencer (2010-09-01)
Changes in the physicochemical quality of rainbow trout's High pressure (HP)treated at 220, 250 and 330 MPa, 7, 15 and 25 degrees C for 5 and 10 min were investigated. HP-treated rainbow trout's showed significantly increased L* value relative to untreated rainbow trout's. Little changes in colour (a* value) were observed, compared to untreated rainbow trout's, which did not showed b* values. From tests of chemical properties, HP-treated rainbow trout's did not showed or showed significantly decreased thiob...
