The goal of this work has been to create an easy-to-use and simple-to-make learning tool for remote sensing at an introductory level. Many students struggle to comprehend what seems to be a very basic knowledge of digital images, image processing and image arithmetic, for example. Because professional programs are generally too complex and overwhelming for beginners and often not tailored to the specific needs of a course regarding functionality, a computer-assisted learning (CAL) program was developed based on the unified modeling language (UML), the present standard for object-oriented (00) system development. A major advantage of this approach is an easier transition from modeling to coding of such an application, if modem UML tools are being used. After introducing the constructed UML model, its implementation is briefly described followed by a series of learning exercises. They illustrate how the resulting CAL tool supports students taking an introductory course in remote sensing at the author's institution.

Field-based sub-boundary extraction from remote sensing imagery using perceptual grouping
TÜRKER, MUSTAFA; Kok, Emre Hamit (Elsevier BV, 2013-05-01)
This study presents an approach for the automatic extraction of dynamic sub-boundaries within existing agricultural fields from remote sensing imagery using perceptual grouping. We define sub-boundaries as boundaries, where a change in crop type takes a place within the fixed geometry of an agricultural field. To perform field-based processing and analysis operations, the field boundary data and satellite imagery are integrated. The edge pixels are detected using the Canny edge detector. The edge pixels are...
A temporal neural network model for constructing connectionist expert system knowledge bases
Alpaslan, Ferda Nur (Elsevier BV, 1996-04-01)
This paper introduces a temporal feedforward neural network model that can be applied to a number of neural network application areas, including connectionist expert systems. The neural network model has a multi-layer structure, i.e. the number of layers is not limited. Also, the model has the flexibility of defining output nodes in any layer. This is especially important for connectionist expert system applications.
An intelligent process planning system for prismatic parts using STEP features
Amaitik, Saleh M.; Kilic, S. Engin (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-01-01)
This paper presents an intelligent process planning system using STEP features (ST-FeatCAPP) for prismatic parts. The system maps a STEP AP224 XML data file, without using a complex feature recognition process, and produces the corresponding machining operations to generate the process plan and corresponding STEP-NC in XML format. It carries out several stages of process planning such as operations selection, tool selection, machining parameters determination, machine tools selection and setup planning. A h...
A Virtual reality-based training environment designed for hands-on experience of software development
Güleç, Ulaş; İşler, Veysi; Yılmaz, Murat; Department of Computer Engineering (2018)
This thesis study proposes an environment that provides an interactive virtual reality experience for individuals about the tasks of software development process starting from requirement analysis through software testing. The environment transports participants to the virtual world of a software development organization where they experience development problems. In this environment, the participant takes on the role of a novice software developer being recruited into a virtual software development organiz...
A knowledge based product line for semantic modeling of web service families
Orhan, Umut; Doğru, Ali Hikmet; Department of Computer Engineering (2008)
Some mechanisms to enable an effective transition from domain models to web service descriptions are developed. The introduced domain modeling support provides verification and correction on the customization part. An automated mapping mechanism from the domain model to web service ontologies is also developed. The proposed approach is based on Feature-Oriented Domain Analysis (FODA), Semantic Web technologies and ebXML Business Process Specification Schema (ebBP). Major contributions of this work are the c...
