Analysis of roof fall hazards and risk assessment for Zonguldak coal basin underground mines

The roof fall hazards are frequent problems of underground coal mines, which are generally unpredictable due to the associated uncertainties. These uncertainties, which arise from geological and stress conditions and mine environment, make the control of roof fall hazards difficult in underground coal mines. The most efficient method for coping with uncertainties in roof fall hazards is the use of risk assessment techniques. In this study, a risk assessment and management methodology is proposed for roof fall hazards in underground mines of the Zonguldak coal basin. The annual rates of roof falls obtained from the five mines in the basin are statistically analyzed. The components of risk, which are the probability of roof fall and consequences of roof fall hazard are identified and quantified. The probability of roof fall is computed by fitting a distribution function to the annual roof fall, while the consequences of roof falls are quantified based on a cost model. Then a decision analysis methodology for evaluating the performance of possible alternative action to be taken in order to decrease the risk, is developed. The results show that the underground coal mines in the Zonguldak coal basin have considerably high risk levels and hence require comprehensive risk management schemes. Development of a GIS-based monitoring and management system for underground coal mining safety
Şalap, Seda; KARSLIOĞLU, MAHMUT ONUR; Demirel, Nuray (Elsevier BV, 2009-11-01)
Coal mine safety is of paramount concern to mining industry. Mine accidents have various causes and consequences including catastrophic failure of mine, substantial economic losses and most notably loss of lives. Therefore, any initiative in mine monitoring is of vital importance for progressing safety surveillance and maintenance.
Modeling of ECBM recovery from Amasra coalbed in Zonguldak Basin, Turkey
Sınayuç, Çağlar (Elsevier BV, 2009-01-07)
Zonguldak coal basin is the only productive hard coal basin of Turkey. The eastern part of the basin is called as Bartin-Amasra District, which has deeper coal seams. The depth and difficulty of mining these coal seams make this district an important candidate for coalbed methane (CBM) recovery. However, there is not enough reservoir data for modeling purposes. In this study, the lithologic information collected for coal mining industry was used to determine the correlations and the continuity of the coal s...
Assessment of shrinkage-swelling influences in coal seams using rank-dependent physical coal properties
Balan, Huseyin Onur; Gumrah, Fevzi (Elsevier BV, 2009-01-07)
Characterization of coal reservoirs and determination of in-situ physical coal properties related to transport mechanism are complicated due to having lack of standard procedures in the literature. By considering these difficulties, a new approach has been developed proposing the usage of relationships between coal rank and physical coal properties. In this study, effects of shrinkage and swelling (SS) on total methane recovery at CO2 breakthrough (TMRB), which includes ten-year primary methane recovery and...
Assessment and management of roof fall risks in underground coal mines
Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem; Einstein, HH (Elsevier BV, 2004-01-01)
Accidents caused by roof falls are commonly faced problems of underground coal mines. These accidents may have detrimental effects on workers in the form of injury, disability or fatality as well as mining company due to downtimes, interruptions in the mining operations, equipment breakdowns, etc. This study proposes a risk and decision analysis methodology for the assessment and management of risk associated with mine roof falls in underground coal mines. In the proposed methodology, risk assessment requir...
Indicator-based sustainability assessment for the mining sector plans: Case of Afsin-Elbistan Coal Basin
Yaylaci, Evren Deniz; Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem (Elsevier BV, 2016-08-01)
Environmental, social and economic impacts of the mining sector are evaluated separately or holistically with different tools at the project- and strategic-level in order to achieve effective resource management and to prevent unsound mining operations. As coal is one of the extensively utilized primary energy sources in the world, the coal mining and its negative impacts are criticized frequently in terms of sustainability criteria. Therefore, integrating the sustainability criteria at the strategic level ...
