A fuel cell test module was designed and constructed to determine the performance of an alkaline fuel cell. The sim was to optimize its performance by changing some of its parameters and to integrate it with a hydrogen photobioreactor in future. The fuel cell was a single cell, hydrogen-oxygen, aqueous electrolyte type. The performance characteristics of the cell have been investigated. The electrodes were multilayer Teflon bonded gas diffusion type and were prepared by the rolling method. Active carbon or carbon black was used as support material whereas platinum as catalyst and nickel screen as backing material. The components of the electrodes were adjusted until optimum performance of the fuel cell was obtained. The electrodes prepared were 0.5 mm thick having 5 cm(2) area with different platinum loading.

Numerical investigation of a stand alone solar hydrogen energy system effects of PEFC degradation
Ender, Ozden; Tarı, İlker (null; 2015-08-12)
An existing stand-alone solar energy system producing hydrogen for energy storage is numerically investigated focusing on the degradation of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) and its effects on the overall performance of the system. The system consists of Photovoltaic (PV) panels, polymer electrolyte based electrolyzers, H2 and O2 storage tanks and a commercial PEFC stack. A PEFC is numerically investigated both as new and as degraded (for about two years). Using a variety of observed degradation pattern...
An experimental study on the hypergolic ignition of hydrogen peroxide and ethanolamine
Ak, M. A.; Ulaş, Abdullah; Sumer, B.; Yazici, B.; Yildirim, C.; Gonc, L. O.; Orhan, F. E. (Elsevier BV, 2011-01-01)
This paper presents the hypergolic ignition test results of a potential environmentally friendly liquid propellant consisting of hydrogen peroxide oxidizer (with a concentration of 85%) and ethanolamine fuel for use in rocket engines. Open cup drop tests were conducted to study the effect of amount of metal salt catalyst in fuel and the initial temperatures of fuel and oxidizer on the ignition delay time. To test the hypergolic ignition of bipropellant formulation in a real rocket engine environment, a pres...
An investigation of the performance of a boron/potassium-nitrate based pyrotechnic igniter
Ulaş, Abdullah; Kuo, Kenneth K. (2006-08-01)
The performance of a boron/potassium-nitrate based pyrotechnic igniter, used as an initiator in airbag gas generators, was investigated at different initial temperatures. Igniter firings were conducted in a small vented combustion chamber in order to measure the instantaneous chamber pressures. A theoretical model, which considers multi-phase products and lumped chamber parameters, was adopted to determine the discharging gas phase and condensed phase mass flow rates from the igniter. The data reduction mod...
Numerical investigation of bubbling fluidized bed to be used as high temperature thermal energy storage
Hiçdurmaz, Serdar; Tarı, İlker; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2017)
A thermal energy storage unit designed to be used in a solid particle concentrated solar energy system is analysed with the help of a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics tool. Hydrodynamics of the bubbling fluidized sand bed of which dimensions are 0.28 m x 1 m x 0.025 m to be used as direct contact heat exchanger are modelled and validated. Geldart B type particles with diameter of 275 micron and density of 2500 kg/m3 are used in modelling of bubbling fludized sand bed. Syamlal O’Brien drag model with ...
