The effect of zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO4), and organoclay were studied to improve the flame retardancy of polyamide-6 composites containing organic phosphinates. The flame retardancy of polyamide-6 composites was investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), Underwriters Laboratories (UL-94) standard, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and mass loss calorimeter. The addition of 15wt% aluminum phosphinate (AlPi) increased the LOI value from 22.5 to 29.5, and V0 rating was obtained from UL-94 test. The addition of organoclay, ZnB, and borophosphate does not change the predominant gas phase mechanism of AlPi during LOI and UL-94 tests. The addition of organoclay increased the condensed phase mechanism of AlPi physically by the protective effect of layered silicate, whereas the addition of ZnB increased the condensed phase mechanism of AlPi chemically by the formation of boron aluminum phosphate species deducted from mass loss calorimeter studies. Effect of boron containing materials on flammability and thermal degradation of polyamide-6 composites containing melamine cyanurate
Yılmaz, Ayşen; Bayramli, Erdal (2011-05-01)
Three different boron containing materials, zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO(4)), and boron and silicon containing oligomer (BSi), were used to improve the flame retardancy of melamine cyanurate (MC) in a polyamide-6 (PA-6) matrix. The combustion and thermal degradation characteristics were investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and scanning electron microscop...
The effect of tin dioxide (SnO2) on the anatase-rutile phase transformation of titania (TiO2) in mica-titania pigments and their use in paint
Topuz, Berna Burcu; Gündüz, Güngör; MAVİŞ, BORA; Colak, Uner (2011-08-01)
The synthesis of mica-titania special effect pigment and the effect of rutile promoting additive, tin dioxide (SnO2), on the phase transformation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) were investigated. SnO2 coating with variable thicknesses on sieved and pre-treated muscovite mica prior to TiO2 coating yields a pearlescent pigment with higher rutile-to-anatase ratio. Different than what is reported in a few cases, not the co-deposition of SnO2 and TiO2, but the coating of SnO2 before TiO2 was found critical in obtain...
The role of nanoparticle geometry in flame retardancy of polylactide nanocomposites containing aluminium phosphinate
Isitman, Nihat Ali; Doğan, Mehmet Onur; BAYRAMLI, ERDAL; Kaynak, Cevdet (2012-08-01)
Although there is considerable research effort in the development of halogen-free flame-retardant polylactide (PLA), a bio-based aliphatic polyester, the potential synergistic interactions of nanoparticles and conventional additives have scarcely been considered. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the influence of nanofiller geometry on fire retardancy of PLA nanocomposites containing aluminium diethylphosphinate (AlPi) flame retardant. For this purpose, a variety of nanofiller geometries were utili...
The effects of metallic catalysts on light crude oil oxidation in limestone medium
Celebioglu, D; Bağcı, Ali Suat (2002-08-20)
In this study, 28 experiments were performed to study the effects of metallic additives on light crude oil oxidation in limestone medium. Karakus and Beykan crude oils from Turkish oil fields were used. The metallic additives were ferric chloride (FeCl3) copper chloride (CuCl) and magnesium chloride (MgCl(2)(.)6H(2)O). The mixture of aqueous solutions of three metallic salts with limestone and the crude oils was subjected to a controlled heating schedule under a constant flow rate of air. The produced gas w...
Influence of zinc borate on flame retardant and thermal properties of polyurethane elastomer composites containing huntite-hydromagnesite mineral
Dike, Ali Sinan; Tayfun, Umit; DOĞAN, Mehmet (2017-11-01)
The effect of zinc borate (ZnB) was studied on the flame retardant and thermal properties of thermoplastic polyurethane containing huntite-hydromagnesite. The flame retardant properties of thermoplastic polyurethane-based composites were investigated using limiting oxygen index, vertical burning test (UL 94), thermogravimetric analysis, and mass loss calorimeter. No remarkable effect of ZnB was observed on the flammability properties of composites. UL 94 rating did not change regardless of the added amount ...
