The effect of zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO4), and organoclay were studied to improve the flame retardancy of polyamide-6 composites containing organic phosphinates. The flame retardancy of polyamide-6 composites was investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), Underwriters Laboratories (UL-94) standard, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and mass loss calorimeter. The addition of 15wt% aluminum phosphinate (AlPi) increased the LOI value from 22.5 to 29.5, and V0 rating was obtained from UL-94 test. The addition of organoclay, ZnB, and borophosphate does not change the predominant gas phase mechanism of AlPi during LOI and UL-94 tests. The addition of organoclay increased the condensed phase mechanism of AlPi physically by the protective effect of layered silicate, whereas the addition of ZnB increased the condensed phase mechanism of AlPi chemically by the formation of boron aluminum phosphate species deducted from mass loss calorimeter studies. Effect of boron containing materials on flammability and thermal degradation of polyamide-6 composites containing melamine cyanurate
Yılmaz, Ayşen; Bayramli, Erdal (2011-05-01)
Three different boron containing materials, zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO(4)), and boron and silicon containing oligomer (BSi), were used to improve the flame retardancy of melamine cyanurate (MC) in a polyamide-6 (PA-6) matrix. The combustion and thermal degradation characteristics were investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and scanning electron microscop...
Flame retardancy effects of zinc borate and nanoclay in ABS, and boron compounds in PET
Özkaraca, Ayşe Çağıl; Kaynak, Cevdet; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2011)
In this thesis there were two main purposes, the first one being to investigate effects of zinc borate (ZB) on the flammability behavior of ABS when used with and without a traditional brominated flame retardant (BFR) / antimony trioxide (AO) system. The second purpose was to investigate contribution of nanoclays (NC) to the flame retardancy performance of the same traditional BFR compound with various combinations of AO and ZB again in ABS matrix. For these purposes, materials were melt compounded by using...
The effect of tin dioxide (SnO2) on the anatase-rutile phase transformation of titania (TiO2) in mica-titania pigments and their use in paint
Topuz, Berna Burcu; Gündüz, Güngör; MAVİŞ, BORA; Colak, Uner (2011-08-01)
The synthesis of mica-titania special effect pigment and the effect of rutile promoting additive, tin dioxide (SnO2), on the phase transformation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) were investigated. SnO2 coating with variable thicknesses on sieved and pre-treated muscovite mica prior to TiO2 coating yields a pearlescent pigment with higher rutile-to-anatase ratio. Different than what is reported in a few cases, not the co-deposition of SnO2 and TiO2, but the coating of SnO2 before TiO2 was found critical in obtain...
Effects of boron compound on characteristics of poly(methyl methacrylate) and its nanocomposites
Göktaş, Müberra; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Yılmaz, Ayşen; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2016)
In this work, composites of poly(methyl methacrylate) and benzene-1,4diboronic acid (BDBA) and their nanocomposites with organically modified montmorillonite OMMT prepared by solution and melt mixing, were characterized to study effects of boron content and the preparation method on the properties of PMMA. SEM images showed homogeneous dispersion of BDBA particles for the melt blended, whereas, agglomeration for the solution mixed PMMA/BDBA composites. XRD and TEM results of PMMA nanocomposites indicated th...
The effect of boron substitution on cyclacenes
Türker, Burhan Lemi; Azizoglu, A (2001-01-15)
AM1-type semiempirical molecular orbital treatment was performed on the Huckel-type cyclacenes having certain number of boron atoms at the peri-positions and at the fusion sites of the arenoid rings. The effect of boron atoms is generally destabilizing in all the cases as compared to their unsubstituted cyclacene counterparts. The AM1 results revealed that certain properties of the boron-substituted cyclacenes are affected not only by the number of arenoid rings they have but also by the nature of their per...
