This article reports the chromium (VI) removal from water by preparing polyacrylonitrile-co-poly (2-ethyl hexylacrylate) (PAN(92)-co-P2EHA(8)) and polyaniline (PANI) nanoporous membranes at various PANI loadings. It was observed that chromium (VI) rejections of nanoporous membranes are highly concentration and pH dependent. Almost complete chromium removal (99.9%) with higher flux values (120-177 L m-2 h-1) was observed for nanoporous membranes. Moreover, nanoporous membranes were also demonstrated as fouling resistant. Total flux loss was low and a part was attributed to reversible flux loss, which cannot cause any permanent hysteresis and easily overcome with simple washing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies were performed for identifying cross sectional morphology. It was pointed out that pore size should be small enough for filtration and optimized for higher flux but pores should be functionalized for rejection. Chemical structure, swelling ratios, sheet resistivity, and fracture morphologies of nanoporous membranes were reported. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2012. (C) 2012 Society of Plastics Engineers

High performance Pt nanoparticles prepared by new surfactants for C-1 to C-3 alcohol oxidation reactions
ŞEN, FATİH; Gökağaç Arslan, Gülsün; Sen, Selda (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-09-07)
In this study, platinum nanoparticles have been prepared using PtCl4 as a starting material and 1-hexylamine, N-methylhexylamine, N,N-dimethylhexylamine, 1-heptylamine, N-methylheptylamine, and N, N-dimethylheptylamine as surfactants. All these surfactants were used in this synthesis, for the first time, to explore the effect of primary, secondary, and tertiary amine and chain length on the size and catalytic activity toward C1-C3 alcohol electro-oxidation. The electrochemical performance of all catalysts w...
Extremely fouling resistant zwitterionic copolymer membranes with similar to 1 nm pore size for treating municipal, oily and textile wastewater streams
Bengani-Lutz, Prity; Zaf, Ruken Dilara; Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep; Asatekin, Ayse (2017-12-01)
In this study, we document the performance of novel zwitterionic copolymer membranes with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of around 1 kDa in treating municipal and industrial wastewater streams. These membranes were prepared by forming selective layers of self-assembling zwitterionic amphiphilic random copolymers on porous supports by a simple coating method. In single-and mixed-solute fouling tests with common components of effluent organic matter in municipal wastewater feeds (polysaccharides, natural o...
Room temperature aerobic Suzuki cross-coupling reactions in DMF/water mixture using zeolite confined palladium(0) nanoclusters as efficient and recyclable catalyst
DURAP, FEYYAZ; Rakap, Murat; AYDEMİR, MURAT; Özkar, Saim (2010-07-15)
Herein we report the use of zeolite confined palladium(0) nanoclusters as efficient and recyclable catalyst for Suzuki cross-coupling reactions of aryl bromides with phenylboronic acid. Zeolite confined palladium(0) nanoclusters are highly active catalyst for the Suzuki cross-coupling reactions under mild conditions (room temperature, in air) in DMF/water (1:9) mixture. A variety of aryl bromides undergo Suzuki cross-coupling with phenylboronic acid with quantitative GC yields of biaryl derivatives. Recycli...
Robust superhydrophilic patterning of superhydrophobic ormosil surfaces for high-throughput on-chip screening applications
Beyazkılıç Ayas, Pınar; Tuvshindorj, Urandelger; Yildirim, Adem; Elbuken, Caglar; Bayindir, Mehmet (2016-01-01)
This article describes a facile method for the preparation of two-dimensionally patterned superhydrophobic hybrid coatings with controlled wettability. Superhydrophobic coatings were deposited from nanostructured organically modified silica (ormosil) colloids that were synthesized via a simple sol-gel method. On the defined areas of the superhydrophobic ormosil coatings, stable wetted micropatterns were produced using Ultraviolet/Ozone (UV/O) treatment which modifies the surface chemistry from hydrophobic t...
Effectiveness of anaerobic biomass in adsorbing heavy metals
Haytoglu, B; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Yetiş, Ülkü (2001-01-01)
This study focuses on the effectiveness of waste anaerobic dead biomass (AIDE) in adsorbing heavy metals, namely Pb(II), Cr(VI), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II). The metal uptake capacity of ADB was investigated and compared with the values for various biomass types from the literature. The biomass, which was grown under laboratory conditions using a synthetic wastewater, was used throughout the study after sterilization. The maximum metal adsorptive capacities were evaluated by running isotherm tests at 25 degre...
