Different dynamics of youth participation in Mardin, Turkey
Konuralp, Özge; Kalaycıoğlu, Hediye Sibel; Department of Social Policy (2016)
This study aims to find out different dynamics of youth participation in Mardin, which is one of the least developed regions of Turkey. Throughout the thesis I try to find out different dimensions that influence the level of participation and the different dynamics through which young people differentiate in terms of their social, cultural and political participation. Beyond youth participation researches conducted with young people living in urban areas, I decided to conduct the research in Mardin/South-ea...
Effects of melodic accents on perception of intensity
Tekman, HG (University of California Press, 1998-06-01)
Melodically accented tones are perceived as having higher intensity. Subjects judged whether or not all of the tones in a sequence were of equal intensity. Melodic accents were created by pitch skips, and the intensity of the tones that followed the skips was manipulated. Introduction of the melodic accents reduced detection of lower intensity tones more than it reduced the detection of higher intensity tones. This effect did not change as a result of regular or irregular timing of the tones whose intensity...
EXPERIMENTS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERDE AND SEYIR IN TURKISH MAKAM MUSIC
Akkoc, Can; Sethares, William A.; Karaosmanoglu, M. Kemal (University of California Press, 2015-04-01)
"WHEN I WAS A KID, THE ELDERS IN THE VILLAGE COULD TELL THE MAKAM OF A PIECE JUST BY LISTENING." While interviewing performers, enthusiasts, and experts in traditional Turkish taksims (improvisations), variations of this comment were made many times. Some of the respondents claimed to be able to identify the makam of a taksim, but others believed that this ability might now be a lost art. This paper documents a series of experiments (based on caricaturized or skeletonized taksim-like creations) designed to ...
Everyday tactics of youth coping with socio-spatial stigmatization in Şakirpaşa, Adana
Atmaca, Mustafa Çağlar; Şengül, Hüseyin Tarık; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2017)
In this thesis, I examine the effects of socio-spatial stigmatization and economic exclusion, and the coping strategies of youths exposed to these conditions. To this aim, I conducted a field study based on in depth interviews and participant observation in Şakirpaşa, one of the stigmatized neighborhoods of Adana. In this thesis, I object two dominant approaches that romanticize/dramatize or criminalize the poverty-related symptoms such as crime, violence etc. The common point of both approaches is to accep...
Ab initio studies on phase behavior of barium titanate
Uludogan, M; Cagin, T; Goddard, WA (2002-04-05)
Using DFT methods we have studied structure, equation of state, and phase behavior of BaTiO3. We have identified the pressure induced phase transformations from the rhombohedral to orthorhombic structure at ca. 5 GPa and from tetragonal phase to cubic phase at ca. 7.5 GPa.
