Biofilms attached to Myriophyllum spicatum play a dominant role in nitrogen removal in constructed wetland mesocosms with submersed macrophytes: Evidence from N-15 tracking, nitrogen budgets and metagenomics analyses
Mu, Xiaoying; Lv, Xiaoyang; Liu, Wei; Qiu, Changhao; Ma, Yu; Zhang, Songhe; Jeppesen, Erik (Elsevier BV, 2020-11-01)
The mechanisms behind nitrogen removal by the submersed macrophyte-biofilm complex in wetlands remain to be fully elucidated. This study investigated the role of Myriophyllum spicatum and the biofilm on their leaves in nitrogen removal in mesocosm experiments. N-15 tracking showed that 61.9% and 30% of the N-15, respectively, was removed from the system and assimilated by the macrophyte-biofilm complex after loading with 5.4 mg L-1 N-15 labelled NH4+ for 17 days. Nitrogen budget results showed that about 0....
Some remarks on the removal rates of H2S within the suboxic zone of the Black Sea
Gokmen, S; Basturk, O (1997-06-19)
This work constitutes an initial effort for studying the removal and/or oxidation rates of hydrogen sulfide at different surfaces of the suboxic zone of the Black Sea. The measurements were made by mixing waters from the suboxic zone (sigma(theta)=15.70-16.20) and from the upper layer of the anoxic zone (sigma(theta)=16.50). The half-life of H2S removal within the interior of cyclonic gyre was found to be twice that measured in the rim current region close to the Bosphorus northern exit, whereas the largest...
Reliability analysis process and reliability improvement of an inertial measurement unit (IMU)
Ünlüsoy, Özlem; Alemdaroğlu, Hüseyin Nafiz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2010)
Reliability is one of the most critical performance measures of guided missile systems. It is directly related to missile mission success. In order to have a high reliability value, reliability analysis should be carried out at all phases of the system design. Carrying out reliability analysis at all the phases of system design helps the designer to make reliability related design decisions in time and update the system design. In this study, reliability analysis process performed during the conceptual desi...
Biochemical and Molecular Characterization of Strontium-resistant Environmental Isolates of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Sphingomonas paucimobilis
Ozer, Gamze; Ergene, Aysun; İçgen, Bülent (Informa UK Limited, 2013-03-13)
Strontium resistance was investigated in strains isolated from the river Kzlrmak which has been affected by industrial and agricultural heavy metal pollution from the surrounding facilities and domestic effluents from the city Krkkale, Turkey. Strontium-resistant isolates with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 2000mg L-1 were isolated and identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens and Sphingomonas paucimobilis. Both isolates were shown to be resistant to other heavy metals like aluminum, lithium, barium, nic...
Cellular uptake, genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles in human breast cells
Asik, Elif; Akpinar, Yeliz; Güray, Nülüfer Tülün; Iscan, Mesude; ÇAKMAK DEMİRCİGİL, GONCA; Volkan, Mürvet (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2016-01-01)
Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been increasingly used for many years as MRI agents and for gene delivery and hyperthermia therapy, although there have been conflicting results on their safety. In this study, cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (CoFe-MNPs) were prepared by the co-precipitation method and their surfaces were modified with silica by the sol-gel method. The particle and hydrodynamic sizes, morphology and crystal structure of the bare and silica-coated CoFe-MNPs were evaluated by transmiss...
