The dyeability of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fiber was tried to be improved with the addition of organoclay during melt spinning process. The tensile, thermal and morphological properties of the fiber samples were characterized by tensile testing, differential scanning calorimeter, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The effects of disperse dye type, dye bath and organoclay concentrations on the dyeability and wash fastness properties of the fiber samples were investigated. It was found that the addition of organoclay reduced the percent crystallinity (X (c)) as the amount increased. The tensile strength (sigma) of pure PLA fiber increased with the addition of 1 wt% organoclay. However, the further addition of organoclay (3 wt%) reduced the sigma of PLA fiber. The organoclay containing PLA fibers were dyed to deeper depth as the amount of organoclay increased for both disperse dyes. It was observed that the addition of organoclay did not affect the wash fastness properties of pure PLA fiber.

Improving the dyeability of poly (lactic acid) fiber using octa (aminophenyl) POSS nanoparticle during melt spinning
Baykus, Onur; DOĞAN, Şengül Dilem; Tayfun, Umit; DAVULCU, Asım; DOĞAN, Mehmet (2017-01-01)
Disperse dye structure affects the dyeability of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) fiber due to the low dyeing temperature and the short dyeing time. Thus, the dye uptake value of PLA fiber is low for some disperse dyes and needs to be improved. In this study, the dyeability of PLA fiber is improved with the addition of synthesized octa (aminophenyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OAP-POSS) nanoparticle during the melt spinning process. The effects of dyeing conditions including dyeing temperature and time, O...
Effect of Alkaline Treatment and Pre-impregnation on Mechanical and Water Absorbtion Properties of Pine Wood Flour Containing Poly (Lactic Acid) Based Green-Composites
Altun, Yasemin; DOĞAN, Mehmet; Bayramlı, Erdal (2013-09-01)
The effect of surface treatments and wood flour (WF) ratio on the mechanical, morphological and water absorption properties of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) based green-composites were studied. WF/PLA interfacial adhesion was promoted by means of alkaline treatment and pre-impregnation with dilute solution of matrix material. The composite materials were manufactured with twin screw extruder and injection molded samples were used for characterization. According to tensile test results, the inclusion of WF withou...
Extensive deformation behavior of an all-oxide Al2O3-TiO2 nanostructured multilayer ceramic at room temperature
Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi; Kagawa, Yutaka (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2009-11-01)
An all-oxide Al2O3-TiO2 ceramic multilayer composed of 10-100 nm thick alternating layers was fabricated using the reactive magnetron sputtering process. Microindentation tests were carried out on the multilayer ceramic followed by microstructural observations of the cross-sections of the indented sites to characterize the indentation response of the system. During the observations, it was noted that an extensive room temperature "deformation" occurred in the multilayer ceramic material. The material shows ...
Conducting copolymers of thiophene-functionalized polystyrene
Papila, O; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yagci, Y; Cianga, L (Informa UK Limited, 2004-01-01)
The syntheses of conducting copolymers of thiophene-functionalized polystyrene and pyrrole (PS/PPy) were achieved using p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) as the supporting electrolyte via constant potential electrolysis technique. Characterization of the samples was performed by a combination of techniques: cyclic voliammetry (CV), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning colorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), NMR, and FT-IR analyses. The conductivities were measured by the four-...
Improving the ductility of polylactic acid parts produced by fused deposition modeling through polyhydroxyalkanoate additions
Kaygusuz, Burçin; Özerinç, Sezer (2019-11-01)
Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most commonly used materials for fused deposition modeling (FDM) due to its low cost, biocompatibility, and desirable printing characteristics. However, its low ductility is a major disadvantage for engineering applications where high damage tolerance is needed. This study investigates the feasibility of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) additions to PLA for improving the ductility of parts produced by FDM. Thermal and mechanical behavior of PLA/PHA specimens containing 12 wt % ...
