One of the most debated issues in Software Engineering is effort estimation and one of the main points is about which could be (and how many) the right data from an historical database to use in order to obtain reliable estimates. In many of these studies, software size (measured in either lines of code or functional size units) is the primary input. However, the relationship between effort and the components of functional size (BFC - Base Functional Components) has not yet been fully analyzed. This study explores whether effort estimation models based on BFCs types, rather than those based oil a single total value, would improve estimation models. For this empirical study, the project data in the International Software Benchmarking Standards Group (ISBSG) Release 10 dataset, which were functionally sized by the COSMIC FFP method, are used.

Exploration of an Error Prevention Model for COSMIC Functional Size Measurement Method
Salmanoğlu, Murat; Demirörs, Onur (2012-10-19)
The reliability of Functional size is crucial for effort and cost estimation in software development projects. However, estimation results may differ because of the errors made in the measurement process. This research proposes an error prevention model for COSMIC Functional Size Measurement method to increase the reliability of the measurements. The model has two main suggestions; first, to use the types of the functional processes during the measurement to prevent errors, and the second, to use a cardinal...
EFES: An Effort Estimation Methodology
Tunalilar, Seckin; Demirörs, Onur (2012-10-19)
The estimation of effort is at the heart of project tasks, since it is used for many purposes such as cost estimation, budgeting, monitoring, project planning, control and software investments. Researchers analyze problems of the estimation, propose new models and use new techniques to improve estimation accuracy. However, effort estimation problem is not only computational but also a managerial problem and we need a defined estimation methodology to guide companies in their effort estimation tasks. Managem...
Reliability of COSMIC Functional Size Measurement Results: A Multiple Case Study on Industry Cases
Top, Ozden Ozcan; Demirörs, Onur; Ozkan, Baris (2009-08-29)
Accuracy of the functional size is critical in software project management, since functional size is the most prevalent input for effort and cost estimation models. Functional size measurement is performed based on standardized manuals; however, the accuracy of FSM results is still based on the knowledge and cautions of the measurers. In this study we performed a multiple case study to identify the reliability of COSMIC and to observe the frequently encountered errors during functional size measurement. Pro...
How Does Software Visualization Contribute to Software Comprehension? A Grounded Theory Approach
Duru, Haci Ali; Çakır, Murat Perit; Isler, Veysi (2013-11-02)
Despite their ability to synthesize vast amounts of information, software visualization tools are not widely adopted in the software engineering industry. In an effort to investigate the underlying reasons, we conducted a usability study to investigate the affordances of software visualization techniques for the maintenance of complex software systems. Expert programmers were asked to carry out programming tasks with or without using a software visualization tool while their screens and eye gaze patterns we...
Use Case Point (UCP) Methodology for Software Effort Estimation
AYYILDIZ, TÜLİN ERÇELEBİ; Koçyiğit, Altan; Kara, Aydin (2012-11-03)
It is an important issue in the software industry to predict how much effort will be required for a software project. The more accurate the effort estimation is in the early product development lifecycle, the higher is the performance in utilization of the resources and the in meeting the deadline requirements. There are some numbers of methodologies developed for effort estimation. Use Case Points (UCP), which is used for extracting and defining the functional requirements of a software system, is very pop...
