Shear flocculation of chromite fines in sodium oleate solutions

1996-05-01
Akdemir, U
Hicyilmaz, C
In this study, chromite fines were aggregated by stirring after the particle surfaces were made hydrophobic with sodium oleate. The effects of pH, sodium oleate concentration, stirrer speed and flocculation time were examined. Electrokinetic potential and contact angle measurements were also carried out to interpret the flocculation in terms of surface charge and particle hydrophobicity.

Selective shear flocculation of chromite from chromite-serpentine mixtures
Akdemir, U; Hicyilmaz, C (1998-01-15)
In this study, shear flocculation of chromite from mixtures of chromite and serpentine was investigated. The effects of zeta potential, contact angle, stirrer speed, flocculation (stirring) time, settling time and concentration of sodium oleate, Na2SiO3 and Na2SiF6 were tested. Control of zeta potential was the key factor for selective aggregation. Experiments carried out at optimum conditions yielded a concentrate (settled material) assaying 44.6% Cr2O3 with a recovery of 81.0% and selectivity index of 9.7...
Characterization of clay rock samples of a borax ore in relation to their problematical flocculation behavior
ÇIRAK, MUSTAFA; Hoşten, Çetin (2015-11-01)
Beneficiation process in the Kirka Borax Concentrator in Turkey generates a tailings effluent containing 3-10% solids that are composed mainly of colloidal particles of clay-rock-type gangue minerals and some unrecoverable borax fines. These colloidal particles form very stable aqueous suspensions in the tailings, hindering solid/liquid separation and clean water recovery. This leads to difficulties in the sustainable and environmentally acceptable operation of the concentrator. Flocculation studies on thes...
Shear-thickening properties of waxy maize starch dispersions
Wang, Bao; Wang, Li-jun; Li, Dong; Zhou, Yu-guang; Özkan, Necati (2011-12-01)
The influences of starch concentration and test conditions on the shear-thickening behavior of waxy maize starch (WMS) dispersions were investigated. During steady shear tests, both the concentration of WMS and test temperature influenced the shear thickening behavior of the WMS dispersions significantly. The critical shear rate for shear thickening was increased with the increasing of temperature and the decreasing of WMS concentration. No effect of gap size on the shear thickening of the WMS dispersions w...
Structural peculiarities and aging effect in hydrogenated a-Si prepared by inductively coupled plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition technique
Nogay, G.; Ozkol, E.; Ilday, S.; Turan, Raşit (2014-12-01)
In this study, we report the morphological and structural properties of amorphous and nanocrystalline Si thin films deposited by inductively coupled plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) technique at low substrate temperatures using H-2 diluted SiH4 as the source gas. We demonstrated that changing the total deposition pressure across a broad range alters the film properties. The film grew in a columnar fashion, and its topography was rough at nanoscale as identified by high resolution Transmis...
Production of precipitated calcium carbonate from marble wastes
Sezer, Nurettin; Arol, Ali İhsan; Department of Mining Engineering (2013)
The aim of this study was to investigate the production of precipitated calcium carbonate from marble wastes. Limestone is used as the source for the production of precipitated calcium carbonate. Marble wastes primarily constitute of CaCO3. As the major content of the marble waste and limestone are the same, marble wastes can be used as an alternative source for the production of precipitated calcium carbonate. By this way, both the adverse environmental effects of marble wastes can be prevented and the was...
