In this work biodegradation of some Turkish lignite coals by Streptomyces setonii 75 Vi2 in submerged batch cultures was investigated. The effects of coal type, particle size, preoxidation of coal by HNO3, and the starting pH of the microbial culture on solubilization were investigated. It was observed that coal samples that contain the highest amount of lignin solubilize most extensively. The smaller particle size coals solubilize more, and solubilization appears to occur at the external surface of the coal. Under favorable conditions liquid product yields as high as 40% by weight can be achieved.

Biodegradation of BTEX compounds by a mixed culture obtained from petroleum formation water
Babaarslan, C; Abuhamed, T; Mehmetoglu, U; Tekeli, A; Mehmetoglu, T (Informa UK Limited, 2003-07-01)
The biodegradation of BTEX compounds (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and o,m, p-xylenes) by a mixed culture obtained from the formation of water, produced from the petroleum wells of the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) in the Adiyaman region (southeast Turkey), and the effect of biomass concentration on the biodegradation rate of BTEX compounds, both alone and as a mixture, were investigated. The mixed culture, identified as Pseudomanas stutzeri and Vibrio mimicus, was grown on a brain heart infusion...
Beneficiation of Himmetoglu oil shale by flotation as a solid fuel substitute. Part 2. Process optimization by a statistical approach
Altun, Naci Emre; Hwang, HY; Bagci, AS (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2006-01-01)
The effects of the important flotation parameters on the cleaning process of the Himmetoglu oil shale from Turkey were investigated. The individual and multiple interaction effects of conditioning time, flotation time, pulp density, particle size, and frother dosage were determined using statistical analysis and factorial design of experiments. The influence of these parameters on the cleaning performance were evaluated in terms of ash yield, calorific value, and combustible recovery of the concentrates. XR...
AIR OXIDATION OF TURKISH BEYPAZARI LIGNITE .1. CHANGE OF STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS IN OXIDATION REACTIONS AT 150-DEGREES-C
AZIK, M; YURUM, Y; GAINES, AF (American Chemical Society (ACS), 1993-05-01)
The oxidation of Beypazari lignite was carried out in air at 150-degrees-C for up to 168 h. Oxidized samples were withdrawn from a ventilated oven at different periods of time and characterized by elemental analysis, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared (DRIFT), solid-state C-13 CP/MAS/TOSS NMR, and pyrolysis mass (Py-MS) spectroscopies. It was found that oxidation influenced the organic structure and the inorganics at different periods of the oxidation. Iron(II) sulfate was formed in 24 h, during...
A MODIFICATION OF THE DENO OXIDATION PROCESS FOR USE IN THE SOLUBILIZATION OF HIGHER RANKED COALS
BURKE, S; JARVIE, AWP; GAINES, AF (Elsevier BV, 1992-04-01)
Three solvent extracted, methylated British bituminous coals were oxidized with trifluoroperoxyacetic acid (TFPA). The soluble and insoluble fractions were analysed using a range of physical and chemical techniques. The TFPA oxidized insoluble fraction from the highest rank coal, Cortonwood Silkstone, was reduced, tosylated and re-reduced. The resultant product was further solubilized by re-oxidation with TFPA. The re-oxidized insoluble residue was examined by C-13 cross-polarization/magic angle spinning n....
Utilization of fine coal tailings by flotation using ionic reagents
Sis, H; Ozbayoglu, G; Sarikaya, M (Informa UK Limited, 2004-08-01)
Fatty acid type ionic collectors were used as an alternative to conventional oily collectors, kerosene, and pine oil mixture in the flotation of coal tailing with 46.1% ash. The conventional collectors could not reduce the ash content of the concentrate below 22%. On the other hand, ionic collectors were found to be significantly better at reducing the ash content down to 13%. It was concluded that despite their lower flotation yield and higher consumptions, certain ionic collectors could be used successful...
