It is still not completely clear whether carbamazepine causes alterations in vitamin D status and in bone metabolism. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of carbamazepine on serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and on biomarkers of bone formation and resorption in healthy rats. Levels of calcium, 25- hydroxyvitamin D, parathormone, C-telopeptide, bone specific alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin were measured in 3 groups of rats consisting of controls (n=10), isotonic saline solution group (n=10) and carbamazepine group (n=10). Mean calcium levels were found to be significantly lower in healthy controls in comparison to isotonic saline solution and carbamazepine groups (10.0+/-4, 10.81+/-0.16, 10.93+/-0.22 mg/dL, respectively, p<0.05). Mean levels of 25- hydroxyvitamin D, were found to be significantly higher in control group compared to isotonic saline solution group (25- hydroxyvitamin D; 25.91+/-1.12, 19.99+/-0.99 ng/mL, respectively, p<0.01.). Mean levels of parathormone and osteocalcin were found to be significantly higher in control group compared to isotonic saline solution group and carbamazepine group. Parathormone levels were measured as 3.46+/-0.83, 1.08+/-0.08, 0.94+/-0.02 pg/mL, respectively (p<0.01). Osteocalcine levels were measured as 1.66+/-0.001, 1.32+/-0.002, 1.32+/-0.001 ng/mL, respectively (p<0.001). A significant difference in terms of mean serum bone specific alkaline phosphatase and C-telopeptide levels among groups was not observed. The main outcome of this prospective study in healthy rats showed no change in biochemical parameters of bone turnover during treatment with carbamazepine. Effect of quercetin on mRNA and protein expressions of vitamin D metabolizing CYP27B1 and CYP24A1 in human embryonic kidney cell line (HEK-293)
Durukan, Özlem; Akkulak, Merve; Özhan, Güneş; Evin, Emre; Adalı, Orhan (Wiley, 2018-07-01)
Vitamin D is essential compound for life having role not only in the regulation of calcium metabolism but also in the regulation of cell proliferation, immune responses, cardiovascular homeostasis and nervous system. These wide range of actions occur with the enzymatic conversion of vitamin D to 1a,25-dihydroxyvitamin D by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs). While CYP27B1 provides the synthesis of hormonally active form of Vitamin D, 1,25(OH)2D, CYP24A1 involves in catabolism of vitamin D. Quercetin, as one of ...
Effect of fiber addition on gelatinization crystallinity of wheat starch
Güven, Özge; Şensoy, İlkay (null; 2019-11-12)
Dietary fibers (DF) have been shown to decrease postprandial glucose levels of starch-based foods. One possible explanation is that competition between starch and fiber for water may limit starch gelatinization. Less gelatinized, more crystalline starch structure is less susceptible to enzymatic hydrolysis. It is essential to investigate the gelatinization and crystallinity of fiber-added starch since the information obtained could be correlated with the extent of starch digestion. In the present study, sho...
Effect of dietary selenium and vitamin E on the biomechanical properties of rabbit bones
Turan, B; Balcik, C; Akkas, N (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1997-09-01)
It is generally agreed that combined deficiency of selenium and vitamin E leads to several abnormalities including Kashin-Beck disease which is an endemic and chronic degenerative osteoarthrosis. The abnormalities can be reversed by the administration of various forms of selenium and vitamin E.
Effects of metformin on olanzapine induced weight gain in male wistar rats: the change of hypothalamic neurohormones involved in body weight regulation
Kurt, Gizem; Yanık, Tülin; Department of Biology (2014)
Obesity, resulting from the extreme weight gain, is one of the biggest health problems nowadays because it causes disruption of the metabolism and metabolic problems, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease. Atypical (second generation) antipsychotic drugs, which are highly in use, have adverse effects including weight gain. Ongoing researches for the treatment of antipsychotics induced-weight gain are present and one of the promising agents is metformin, an anti-diabetic...
Effects of the quercetin derivative CHNQ, a potent aldo- keto reductase inhibitor, on akr1b1 silenced HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells
Taşkoparan, Betül; Banerjee, Sreeparna; Department of Biology (2016)
Aldo-keto reductases (AKRs) are NAD(P)H dependent oxidoreductases that are known to be involved in the biosynthesis, metabolism and detoxification of a number of substrates including glucose. These enzymes are therefore implicated in the development of diabetic complications. Additionally, this family of enzymes, particularly AKR1B1, has been shown to be involved in pathology of inflammation- associated diseases such as atherosclerosis, asthma, uveitis, sepsis, arthritis, periodontitis and cancer, including...
