It is generally agreed that combined deficiency of selenium and vitamin E leads to several abnormalities including Kashin-Beck disease which is an endemic and chronic degenerative osteoarthrosis. The abnormalities can be reversed by the administration of various forms of selenium and vitamin E.

Effect of medication on biomechanical properties of rabbit bones: Heparin induced osteoporosis
Akkas, N; Yeni, YN; Turan, B; Delilbasi, E; Gunel, U (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1997-11-01)
The aim of this controlled study is to investigate the effect of heparin on osteoporosis initiation and of calcitonin and tamoxifen on the progress of osteoporosis induced by heparin through biomechanical means and, thus, to assist in clinical usage of these drugs, 32 four-month-old female New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four different experimental groups, The animals in group A were administered heparin (Liquemine) intraperitoneally at the dosage of 1000 IU/kg/day, The animals in group B were i...
Effects of diabetes on rabbit kidney and lung CYP2E1 and CYP2B4 expression and drug metabolism and potentiation of carcinogenic activity of N-nitrosodimethylamine in kidney and lung
Arinc, Emel; Arslan, Sevki; Bozcaarmutlu, Azra; Adalı, Orhan (Elsevier BV, 2007-01-01)
There are limited number of studies regarding the influence of diabetes on the regulation of cytochrome P450s and associated drug metabolizing enzyme activities especially in extrahepatic tissues such as kidney. However, there is almost no such study in lung. Alloxan-induced diabetes did not change CYP2B4 expression as measured with immunoblot analysis and associated enzyme, benzphetamine N-demethylase, activity in rabbit kidney and lung. Induction of cytochrome P4502E1 by diabetes was identified by immunoc...
Effect of emodin on doxorubicin-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis on MCF-7 and MCF-10a cells
Kaya, Bade; Güray, Tülin; Uyar, Pembegül; Department of Biology (2014)
Emodin (3-Methyl-1,6,8-trihydroxyanthraquinone), is a phytoestrogenic component of Rheum and Polygonum plant extracts which has been used to treat several diseases since ancient times. It has been shown to have anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and anti-cancer effects in nature. The anti-tumor drug doxorubicin, a widely used chemotherapeutic agent, is used for the treatment of many cancer types including lung, gastric, ovarian and breast cancer. In this study, the effects of pre-, co- and alone treatment of doxo...
Effect of vitamin C and lipoic acid on streptozotocin-induced diabetes gene expression: mRNA and protein expressions of Cu-ZnSOD and catalase
Sadi, Goekhan; Yilmaz, Oekkes; Güray, Nülüfer Tülün (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2008-02-01)
The involvement of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus has been confirmed by numerous studies. In this study, the expression of two antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase which are involved in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species was studied in the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat liver tissues. The enzyme assays showed a significant decrease in both enzymes activities compared to control animals. The RT-PCR and Western-blot analysis results demonstra...
Effect of stereotactic radiosurgery on lipids and proteins of normal and hypoperfused rat brain homogenates: A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study
Toyran, N; Zorlu, F; Severcan, Feride (Informa UK Limited, 2005-12-01)
Purpose: The effect of stereotactic radiosurgery on lipids and proteins of normal and hypoperfused rat brain was investigated to see if hypoxic areas are really more resistant to radiation effects or not.
