The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final downselection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supranuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1° collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the status of the mission at the end of its Phase A study.

The first hours of the optical afterglow from the cosmic gamma-ray burst 030329

We describe the first results Of Our observations of the exceptionally bright optical afterglow from the cosmic gamma-ray burst (GRB) of March 29, 2003 (030329), with the 1.5-m Russian-Turkish telescope (RTT150) installed at the TUBITAK National Observatory (Turkey) at Mount Bakyrlytepe. RTT150 was one of the first medium-class telescopes pointed at the afterglow. The observations began as early as about six hours after the GRB. During the first five hours of our observations, the BVRI flux fell off exactly...
The steady spin-down rate of 4U 1907+09
Baykal, Altan; Alpar, MA; Zand, JI; Strohmayer, T (2001-11-11)
Using X-ray data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, we report the pulse timing results of the accretion-powered, high-mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1907 + 09, covering a time-span of almost two years. We measured three new pulse periods in addition to the previously measured four pulse periods. We are able to connect pulse arrival times in phase for more than a year. The source has been spinning down almost at a constant rate, with a spin-down rate of (nu) over dot = (- 3.54 +/- 0.02) x 10(-14) Hz s(-1) fo...
Probing stellar winds and accretion physics in high mass X ray binaries and ultra luminous X ray sources with LOFT
Maoura, Orlandini; et. al. (2015-01-01)
This is a White Paper in support of the mission concept of the Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT), proposed as a medium-sized ESA mission. We discuss the potential of LOFT for the study of high-mass X-ray binaries and ultra-luminous X-ray sources. For a summary, we refer to the paper.
THE TRANSITION RADIATION DETECTOR OF THE AMS-2 EXPERIMENT
Demirköz, Melahat Bilge (2002-11-01)
The AMS magnetic spectrometer will be installed on the International Space Station ISS to measure the properties of cosmic rays in the range of 1 to 1000 GeV during a mission of three years. A Transition Radiation Detector is used in combination with an electromagnetic calorimeter to reach a rejection of 10(-6) protons against positrons up to an energy of 300 GeV. This allows to search for cosmic cold dark matter through their decay products.
A search for supernova remnants in the nearby spiral galaxy M74 (NGC 628)
SONBAŞ, EDA; AKYÜZ, AYSUN; Balman, Şölen; Ozel, M. E. (EDP Sciences, 2010-07-01)
An optical search was carried out for supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Sc type nearby spiral galaxy M 74, using ground-based observations at the TUBITAK National Observatory (TUG, Antalya/Turkey) and the Special Astrophysics Observatory (SAO, Russia). Observations were supplemented by the spectral analysis of archived X-ray data from XMM-Newton and Chandra. The survey of M74 covered similar to 9 arcmin(2) with [S II], H alpha, and their continuum filters. Interference filter images of M 74 were obtained the...
