Social network analysis increasingly bridges the discovery of patterns in diverse areas of study as more data becomes available and complex. Yet the construction of huge networks from large data often requires entirely different approaches for analysis including; graph theory, statistics, machine learning and data mining. This work covers frontier studies on social network analysis and mining from different perspectives such as social network sites, financial data, e-mails, forums, academic research funds, XML technology, blog content, community detection and clique finding, prediction of user’s- behavior, privacy in social network analysis, mobility from spatio-temporal point of view, agent technology and political parties in parliament. These topics will be of interest to researchers and practitioners from different disciplines including, but not limited to, social sciences and engineering.

Integration of geophysical - geological data using geographic information systems
Şirinyıldız, Tunç; Toprak, Vedat; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2003)
This study attempts to integrate geophysical data with other spatial data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study is carried out in a part of Galatean Volcanic Province, north of Ankara. Gravity, magnetic, topographic, rock type and volcanic eruption center data are the data layers used in the study. All data layers are converted to raster format with a grid spacing of 100 m. The first step in the analysis is the pair-wise analyses of all data layers. For the geophysical data, different layers...
Investigating sentimental relation between social media presence and academic success of Turkish Universities
Gunduz, Sedef; Demirhan, Fatih; SAĞIROĞLU, Şeref (2014-12-06)
In this study an approach that uses social networking data for developing sentiment analysis system is proposed. With the help of developed software, it is tried to find out whether there is any relation between universities' academic success and sentiment of the public about them in social media. After collecting enough text based data from Twitter, preprocessing of data is carried out and final data is trained by means of Naive Bayes Classifier. After testing process, experimental results have shown that ...
New approaches to desirability functions by nonsmooth and nonlinear optimization
Akteke-Öztürk, Başak; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm; Köksal, Gülser; Department of Scientific Computing (2010)
Desirability Functions continue to attract attention of scientists and researchers working in the area of multi-response optimization. There are many versions of such functions, differing mainly in formulations of individual and overall desirability functions. Derringer and Suich’s desirability functions being used throughout this thesis are still the most preferred ones in practice and many other versions are derived from these. On the other hand, they have a drawback of containing nondifferentiable points...
A New Mathematical Approach in Environmental and Life Sciences: Gene-Environment Networks and Their Dynamics
Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm; Alparslan-Gok, S. Z.; Soyler, B. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2009-04-01)
An important research area in life sciences is devoted to modeling, prediction, and dynamics of gene-expression patterns. As clearly understood in these days, this enterprise cannot become satisfactory without acknowledging the role of the environment. To a representation of past, present, and most likely future states, we also encounter measurement errors and uncertainties. This paper surveys and improves recent advances in understanding the foundations and interdisciplinary implications of the newly intro...
Design of a web based interface and database structure for structural engineering experimental data /
Kurt, Tolga; Kurç, Özgür; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
This study is conducted in order to design and implement a web-based database application which stores structural and earthquake engineering experimental data and related documents in a main server in a standardized manner and makes it possible for researchers and engineers to add and share experimental data easily. The system is developed in accordance with the standards defined in the scope of the SERIES project which is a project operated by a consortium consisting of related university laboratories and ...
