I attempt to rethink systematic violence against racialized groups in Turkey’s past and present through the framework of Nietzsche’s “On the Use and Abuse of History for Life.” The persistent denial and the willful forgetting of a violent past serves to perpetuate and normalize ongoing practices of violence against racialized groups. Forgetting, in this case, comes with a sense of being haunted by history. I propose to rethink colonial violence in a context where it serves to racialize and homogenize an otherwise cosmopolitan, heterogeneous society.
