The purpose of the study was to find out preservice science teachers' (PSTs) pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) about sustainable development. Data collected qualitatively via individual interviews applied to three female PSTs who are in their senior year at the undergraduate level of Elementary Science Education. Results revealed that PSTs had lack of knowledge about sustainable development, objectives of SD and its place in the science curricula. Moreover PSTs did not have enough information about students' understanding of SD. However PSTs had promising insights about instructional strategies and evaluation and assessment methods.

Experienced science teachers’ subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge regarding biogeochemical cycles in the context of education for sustainable development
Yılmaz Yendi, Bahar; Öztekin, Ceren; Department of Elementary Education (2019)
This study investigated experienced science teachers’ subject matter (SMK) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) regarding biogeochemical cycles in the context of education for sustainable development (ESD). Three science teachers (one male, two females) from different schools participated in the study. In this qualitative research, multiple case studies were used as research design. Data were obtained through interviews, content representations, observations, card sorting activity and teacher documents. ...
Novice and experienced science teachers’ conceptual knowledge of evolutionary theory within the context of micro-and macroevolution
Yesilyurt, Ezgi; Öztekin, Ceren; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Deniz, Hasan (Informa UK Limited, 2019-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to explore science teachers' conceptions about micro-and macro-evolutionary processes. In this study, a case study was employed to compare and contrast novice and experienced middle school science teachers' evolution conceptions. The data were collected using four micro-and macro-evolutionary scenarios alongside cognitive interviews. The findings illustrated that while the novice teacher mostly provided non-Darwinian explanations, the experienced teacher predominantly applied k...
The Investigastion of teachers with respect to knowledge level on environmental concepts
Aydemir, Murat; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2007)
The aim of this study is to investigate the environmental knowledge level of teachers, who teach the elementary science and technology course, and to explore possible relationships between environmental knowledge level and their demographic attributes. In this study, data was obtained by the instrument developed by the researcher to 183 teachers from 91 selected elementary schools throughout Çankaya and Yenimahalle districts of Ankara in spring 2005-2006 semester. The results of the study indicated that par...
Development of Preservice Science Teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in the context of Lesson Study
Güler Nalbantoğlu, Fulden; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Yılmaz Tüzün, Özgül; Department of Elementary Education (2023-2)
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the development of preservice science teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in the context of lesson study. The lesson study was integrated into the Practice Teaching in Science course, and there were four lesson study cycles throughout the study. Each lesson study cycle consisted of planning, teaching, reflecting, re-teaching, and re-reflecting phases. The design of the study was a m...
Examination of pre-service chemistry teachers’ competency in the field of environmental education and sustainable development
Soysal, Ceren; Geban, Ömer; Teksöz, Gaye; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2017)
The purpose of this study was to explore pre-service chemistry teachers’ competency related to Environmental Education and Sustainable Development. In doing so, the frame was set to focus on three fields of competency: (i) content knowledge, (ii) pedagogical content knowledge, (iii) chemistry literacy. The data gathered from 24 pre-service chemistry teachers at the end of the spring semester of 2016-2017. Essay type questions was used as the source of data. The instrument was created by using the current co...
