Inelastic panel zone deformation demands in stell moment resisting frames
Tuna, Mehmet; Topkaya, Cem; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Panel zone is one of the significant parts of beam-column connections in steel structures. Until the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, a few experimental research and parametric studies had been carried out to understand the behavior of the panel zones. However, after the Northridge Earthquake, it was observed that beam-column connections were unable to show presumed seismic performance. Therefore, current design codes needed to be revised to improve seismic performance of connections in general and panel zones i...
Inelastic axial-flexure-shear coupling in a mixed formulation beam finite element
Sarıtaş, Afşin (2009-10-01)
In this paper a beam element that accounts for inelastic axial-flexure-shear coupling is presented. The mathematical model is derived from a three-field variational form. The finite element approximation for the beam uses shape functions for section forces that satisfy equilibrium and discontinuous section deformations along the beam. No approximation for the beam displacement field is necessary in the formulation. The coupling of the section forces is achieved through the numerical integration of an inelas...
Inelastic seismic response analysis and design of torsionally coupled systems
Kaatsız, Kaan; Sucuoğlu, Haluk; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Torsional coupling due to irregular placement of load resisting members and/or uneven mass distribution along a story plan is a very common phenomenon in structural systems. Unsymmetrical-plan buildings with stiffness and/or mass asymmetry behave considerably different compared to regular buildings when they are subjected to earthquake-induced forces. Modern earthquake resistant design related code provisions that employ capacity design principles aim to achieve a certain amount of ductility in the structur...
