The remarkable consumption and environmental concerns related to the utilization of fossil based resources have led researchers to focus on renewable raw materials. Lignocellulosic biomass, the fibrous part of plants with a complex matrix comprising different polysaccharides, mainly cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, is the most abundant, inexpensive, non-starch renewable source in the world. In the present study, hemicellulose, which was obtained from corn cobs by alkali extraction method (with a yield of 30%), was used to produce biodegradable film by extrusion followed by rolling process and solvent casting techniques. The morphological, mechanical and thermal properties were investigated within these two techniques while the thicknesses of films were comparable. The effect of extrusion temperature (75, 90˚C) and screw speed (50, 100 rpm) on film properties were also investigated. Homogenous and crack free films were obtained by extrusion for all conditions. Discontinuous film formation was observed by solvent casted method even they were observed as homogenous and crack free via scanning electron microscopy. The onsets of thermal degradation temperature for solvent casted and extruded films were determined via thermal gravimetric analysis at 300°C. Increasing the extrusion temperature had a slightly positive effect on the mechanical properties of films, whereas screw speed did not have a noticeable effect (p>0.05). While the toughness of the extruded films was 13 MJ/m3, that of the solvent casted films was 5 MJ/m3. The elongation at break values of the extruded and solvent casted films were 28% and 11%, respectively.

Today, due to the environmental concerns about petroleum based polymers, the use of renewable polymers including polysaccharides in food packaging applications is increasing rapidly. In the present study, hemicellulose was extracted from corn cobs, wheat straw and sunflower stalks, and two different techniques, solvent casting and extrusion, were utilized for biodegradable film production. Films produced from different types of biomasses were compared in terms of their mechanical, thermal and morphological ...
Comparison of Productivity Plankton Types and Carbon Export Mechanisms in two Different Regimes of Subtropical North Atlantic a Modeling Study

Improved structure and mechanisms of carbon export and sequestration within marine ecosystem models is vital to better understand and predict changes in the global carbon cycle. We have implemented a 1D lower trophic ecosystem model at long-term time-series stations (BATS and ESTOC) in the North Atlantic for the years 1996-2000. We have investigated the dynamics of the productivity and carbon export, and mechanisms regulating them. Our simulations agree with the previous observations that show similar produ...
Investigation of alkaline pretreatment parameters on amulti-product basis for the co-production of glucose and hemicellulose based films from corn cobs

There is an increasing trend in the world for using renewable sources of fuels and chemicals due to the continuous depletion of fossil fuel reserves besides the environmental issues related with the exploitation of these resources. Lignocellulosic biomass is seen as the most promising candidate to be used instead of fossil sources because of its availability, relatively low price and less competition with food and feed crops. In this study, corn cobs, a lignocellulosic agricultural waste, were subjected to ...

Today, the persistent organic pollutant loads which are formed as a result of modern agriculture and industrial production are becoming very dangerous for the environment and human health. Exposure of living things to these pollutants can occur by direct exposure to pollutants emission or by transport of pollutants as a result of food chain and meteorological events. For this reason, all environmental samples should be analyzed in this context and risk assessments should be made especially for regions where...
An Approach for improving energy efficiency in a commercial building with learning consideration and availability constraints
Çiçek, Cihan Tuğrul; Meral, Fatma Sedef; Department of Operational Research (2014)
Energy efficiency applications are increasingly becoming more popular as available natural resources such as natural gas and fossils have been running out. In this study, we address the scheduling problem of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system of a commercial building with a supporting automation system that controls the energy resources so as to increase energy efficiency. We formulate the problem as a multilevel generalized assignment model to obtain the schedule for the HVAC syste...
