Unveiling Spanish unemployment persistence by output gap: a time-varying parameter approach
Aydın, Dilan; Yıldırım Kasap, Dilem; Department of Economics (2018)
This paper investigates the persistence of Spanish unemployment by incorporating the output gap over the period of 1972-2015. Unlike to the existing literature which identifies labor market rigidity as the triggering factor of high unemployment, we utilize output gap extracted by Kalman filter in order to discriminate between impacts originated from (demand side) shocks and labor market institutions. Time-varying parameter approach allowing for both abrupt and smooth structural changes of parameters facilitat...

Unfolding and reframing heterotopia within the context of peripheral consumption spaces
Simser, Duygu Hazal; Basa, İnci; Department of Architecture (2017)
The term heterotopia, which has come to be known with the conceptualization of French social philosopher Michel Foucault, provides a new way in understanding the space by shaking the accustomed boundaries of our thought. Foucault accentuates space as the concern of today’s anxiety and identifies it as the form of relations between emplacements. In this conception, heterotopias appear as real arrangements that have uncanny and contradictory juxtapositions. However, the ambiguous nature of the concept eases i...
Unveiling the Impact of Cancer Mutations in Phosphosites in Signaling Networks
Basaran, Esra; Tunçbağ, Nurcan (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi Enformatik Enstitüsü; 2022-10)
Signal transduction is predominantly mediated by phosphorylation events; however, phosphosites are inhibited or over-activated in cancer tissues. In this study, we focused on patient-specific mutations in TCGA that overlaps with residues that can be phosphorylated, such as Serine (S), Tyrosine (Y), Threonine (T) and leverage these mutations to understand the pathway-level signaling alterations in cancer. This change may be from S, Y, or T to any amino acid, which we call “lost-phosphosite mutation” or from ...
Unveiling the predictors of academic belonging in higher education
Erer, Sercan; Çapa Aydın, Yeşim (null; 2019-08-12)
Utilizing a survey research method, this study aimed to examine academic belonging of university students and factors predicting it. With such an aim, the research questions have unveiled the departments with the highest and lowest scores in academic belonging and how well individual variables predicted academic belonging of university students. With 470 participants, the results revealed that while the highest score belongs to the city and regional planning department, the lowest is from food engineering. ...
