Aerodynamic investigation of a model scale helicopter rotor in ground effect
Şahbaz, Mehmet; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda; Sezer Uzol, Nilay; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2017)
In this thesis, ground effect issue which is a vital topic for helicopter industry is investigated with model scale. For this purpose, a test setup with model helicopter rotor is established. With setup, ground effect is investigated with inclined ground and ground without inclination. Thrust and torque values are obtained for different rotation speeds with constant collective pitch. Comparison with literature is done and reliability of the test setup is proven. Inclined Ground Effect and Ground Effect with ...
Aerodynamic Optimization of a Swept Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blade
Kaya, Mehmet Numan; Kose, Faruk; Uzol, Oğuz; Ingham, Derek; Ma, Lin; Pourkashanian, Mohamed (2021-09-01)
The aerodynamic shapes of the blades are still of high importance and various aerodynamic designs have been developed in order to increase the amount of energy production. In this study, a swept horizontal axis wind turbine blade has been optimized to increase the aerodynamic efficiency using the computational fluid dynamics method. To illustrate the technique, a wind turbine with a rotor diameter of 0.94 m has been used as the baseline turbine, and the most appropriate swept blade design parameters, namely...

Aerodynamic design and control of tandem wing unmanned aerial vehicle
Kaya, Taşkın; Özgen, Serkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2019)
This thesis presents an approach towards the design methodology of electrical propulsion, tandem wing unmanned aerial vehicle. Due to its possible rewarding features, tandem wing design is investigated as the main subject of this study. The stability and control characteristics of tandem wing aircraft are critical since the interference between the two wings may result in nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics for varying angles of attack. Thus, the design of the controller system requires careful handling, ...
