Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are a fascinating genre among the liquid crystalline material family due to their unique optical properties arising from its periodic helical structure characterized by pitch length.[1]CLCs can reflect selected wavelengths of light within the visible wavelengths. The structural color change by temperature, chemicals, electric field, and magneticfield.[2] The ability to change the color in response to a suitable stimulus exhibit behavior that are forming the basis of numerous passive andactive electro-optic applications.[3] Motivated by this opportunity,we recently produce polymeric micro particles templated from CLC by using photolithography and microwell molding methods on the purpose of sensor applications. This study includes the synthesis and characterization of polymeric micro particles synthesized from cholesteric LC templates, including their shape, size, polydispersity, internal structure, and optical properties. Finally, response of CLC templated polymeric micro particles to volatile organic compounds was tested for sensor applications.

Synthesis and separation properties of B-ZSM-5 zeolite membranes on monolith supports
Kalıpçılar, Halil; Noble, RD; Falconer, JL (2002-12-01)
Alumina-coated, silicon carbide monoliths were used as supports for B-ZSM-5 zeolite membranes, which were synthesized by in situ hydrothermal crystallization. Both 2 turn x 2 mm (66 channels) and 4 mm x 4 mm (22 channels) monoliths with effective membrane area/volume ratios of 10.6 and 7.2 cm(2)/cm(3), respectively, were used. The membranes separated C-4 and C-6 hydrocarbon isomer vapor mixtures with high selectivities. The selectivities and permeances were comparable to tubular ZSM-5 membranes for butane i...
Synthesis and characterization of water soluble polymer stabilized transition metal(0) nanoclusters as catalyst in hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride and ammonia borane
Metin, Önder; Özkar, Saim; Department of Chemistry (2010)
Metal nanoclusters exhibit unique properties which differ from their bulk materials, owing to the quantum size effects. For example, the catalytic activity of transition metal nanoclusters generally increases with decreasing particle size. However, nanoclusters tend to be fairly unstable with respect to the agglomerate into bulk metal in solution and thus special precautions have to be taken to avoid their aggregation or precipitation during the preparation of such nanoclusters in solution. In order to obta...
Synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles by aqueous methods and effect of metal incorporation on the structural/functional properties of nanoparticles
Altıntaş Yıldırım, Özlem; Durucan, Caner; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2014)
Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures have attracted considerable attention in many electrical, optoelectronic and magnetic applications due to their unique properties originating form characteristic wide band gap and large exciton binding energy of ZnO. Electrical, optical and magnetic properties of ZnO nanostructures strongly depend on their size and morphology. Therefore, there has been a strong interest in the synthesis of ZnO nanostructures with well-controlled size and shape. These synthesis approaches shou...
Crystallization of amorphous Ge thin films by nanosecond pulsed infrared laser
Korkut, Ceren; Bek, Alpan; Çınar, Kamil; Department of Physics (2023-1-20)
Crystalline semiconductors have superior optical and electrical properties to an amorphous structure; therefore, they are an essential part of photovoltaic applications. Pulsed laser irradiation is a cost-effective technique for the growth of polycrystalline germanium (pc-Ge). Laser processing also enables the production of local and wide-ranging nano-crystalline surface structures. Germanium has high carrier mobility, and Ge nanocrystals and microcrystals have a great potential in optoelectronics applicati...
Synthesis of gold nanowires with high aspect ratio and morphological purity
Dertli, Elçin; Nalbant Esentürk, Emren; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2012)
Metal nanoparticles have unique optical, electrical, catalytic and mechanical properties, which lead them to various applications in nanotechnology. In particular, noble metal nanowires are attracting growing attention due to their potential applications such as in opto-electronic devices and transparent conductive contacts (TCCs). There are two general approaches to synthesize nanowires: template-assisted and solution phase methods. However, these synthesis approaches have various disadvantages. For exampl...
