Carbon encapsulation of elemental nanoparticles by spark discharge
Livan, Pelin; Öztürk, Tayfur (2018-10-01)
A study was carried out on the carbon encapsulation of a number of elements using a spark discharge generator. The study showed that elements W, V, Ti, and Si formed carbides which were encapsulated successfully by graphitic layers forming a sound core-shell structure. Copper formed a partially filled core-shell structure, attributed to its relatively low condensation temperature, where considerable shrinkage seemed to have occurred after the encapsulation. Mg could not be encapsulated in a core-shell form ...
Carbon Encapsulated Silicon Nanoparticles as Anodes for Lithium Ion Batteries
Livan, P.; Miser, B.; Altinok, S.; Eyovge, C.; Aydınol, Mehmet Kadri; Öztürk, Tayfur (2017-06-01)
An investigation is carried out on the encapsulation of silicon with carbon nanomaterial via gas phase synthesis. Two methods were used; a spark discharge synthesis and RF induction thermal plasma. In the former, the use of silicon and graphite electrodes resulted in the formation of encapsulated nanoparticles 3-5 up to 70 nm in size. The particles were typically agglomerates of sub particles, encapsulated with 3-5 graphitic layers. Synthesis with RF thermal plasma yielded carbonaceous powders comprising Si...
Carbon encapsulation of elemental nanoparticles
Livan, Pelin; Öztürk, Tayfur; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2018)
There is a considerable interest in the encapsulation of nanoparticles into the carbon cages for a variety of purposes e.g. providing stability in detrimental environments, preventing agglomeration, controlling surface modifications and improving in electrical conductivity etc. The current study deals with the encapsulation of elemental particles and is made up of two parts. In the first part, the encapsulation of elemental particles was studied using a spark discharge generator where an elemental rod used ...
Carbon Coating of magnesium via thermal plasma
Aktekin, Burak; Eyövge, Cavit; Öztürk, Tayfur (null; 2018-05-07)
Magnesium is a material of considerable interest for electrochemical as well as thermal energy storage. Carbon coated magnesium or magnesium nanopartciles emebedded in a graphitic matrix could provide solutions to some of the problems currently faced in these application areas. The current study was undertaken to develop Mg-C composites at a variety of length scales. The synthesis was achieved by co-feeding magnesium and methane into an RF thermal plasma reactor. This yielded carbonaceous material with magn...
