The role of submerged macrophytes in stabilising water clarity and the migration pattern of dominant zooplankton in Lake Eymir, Turkey
Sillah, Mohamed; Beklioğlu, Meryem; Department of Biology (2002)
In this study, samplings within macrophyte beds and open water stations to determine the role of submerged macrophytes in stabilising water clarity and the migration pattern of dominant zooplankton from different habitats in Lake Eymir were carried out. The concentrations of nutrients and suspended solids (SS) were lower within the macrophyte beds than in the open water, while the water clarity was higher within the macrophyte beds than in the open water. The macrophyte beds stabilised the water clarity by ...
The role of site effects on elevated seismic demands and corollary structural damage during the October 30, 2020, M7.0 Samos Island (Aegean Sea) Earthquake
Altun, Selim; et. al. (2021-11-01)
On October 30, 2020 14:51 (UTC), a moment magnitude (M) 7.0 (USGS, EMSC) earthquake occurred in the Aegean Sea. This paper presents the reconnaissance findings regarding the site effects on recorded strong ground motion intensities and duration, along with the resulting induced-structural damage in Izmir Bay and Samos Island, respectively. In all rock records, relatively high intensity long period rock spectral accelerations were observed in the mid to long period range of 0.5-1.5 s, which are attributed to...
The impact of over-exploitation on the genetic structure of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) populations determined by RAPD markers
Lise, Yildiray; Kaya, Zeki; Isik, Fikret; Sabuncu, Rumi; Kandemir, Irfan; Önde, Sertaç (2007-01-01)
To determine the possible impact of over-exploitation on the genetic structure of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) populations, three natural and three over-exploited (human degraded) populations of the species in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were investigated with Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). With the 80 RAPT) primers tested, 12 of them yielded 137 polymorphic RAPD fragments. Four of the studied populations maintained unique fragments. The mean proportion of polymorphic fragments fo...
The effect of ecotoxicants on the aquatic food web and prey-predator relationships
Akkaş, Sara Banu; Severcan, Feride; Department of Biology (2009)
There is considerable need for higher-tier aquatic risk assessment and information on toxicant-induced molecular alterations in lower aquatic invertebrates. Thus the current study’s priorities were two-fold: a novel approach utilizing higher-tier ecotoxicity bioassay-guided ATR-FTIR (Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared) spectroscopy to better understand the impact of the presence of fish predation pressure – mimicked by predator-exuded info-chemicals – on cypermethrin or salinity toxicit...
The Asymmetric Impact of Funding Liquidity Risk on the Volatility of Stock Portfolios during the COVID-19 Crisis
Kocaarslan, Barış; Soytas, Ugur (2021-02-01)
In this study, we identify economic transmission channels through which changes in funding liquidity conditions in interbank markets asymmetrically affect volatilities of stock portfolios during the COVID-19 crisis. For the purpose of this study, the quantile regression approach is utilized. Controlling for macroeconomic factors, we document that volatilities of high-risk portfolios increase more in response to a deterioration in funding liquidity conditions compared to less risky portfolios. More important...
