Bar model method as a problem-solving heuristic: an investigation of two preservice teachers' solution paths in problems involving ratio and percentage
Sevinç, Şerife; Lizano, Cheryl (2022-08-01)
This study aimed to explore preservice elementary teachers' use of a bar model as a heuristic for conceptualising relationships between quantities in situations involving ratio and percentages. As a part of a larger project, we focused on two preservice teachers, Maia and Jane, and investigated their solution paths in ratio and percentage problems and the role of the structural representations (i.e., bar model and percent line-bar model) in their solution paths. We analysed these focus participants' written...
Dry Dock Detection in Satellite Images with Representation Learning
Aktaş, Ümit Ruşen; Firat, Orhan; Yarman Vural, Fatoş Tunay (2013-04-26)
In this study, we propose a method to detect dry docks, a harbour man-made object which is hard to recognize, using representation learning in satellite images. Dry docks are coastal structures which may include ships for repairing purposes, and they exist in harbour regions. The search space is pruned by making use of two low-level features that invariantly define docks, and remaining samples are used to train a representation learning system. Experimental results suggest that classification methods using ...
Distance matrices as protein representations
Dinç, Mehmet; Atalay, Mehmet Volkan; Department of Computer Engineering (2022-9-02)
Representing protein sequences is a crucial problem in the field of bioinformatics since any data-driven model's performance is limited by the information contained in its input features. A protein's biological function is dictated by its structure and knowing a protein's structure can potentially help predict its interactions with drug candidates or predict its Gene Ontology (GO) term. Yet, off-the-shelf protein representations do not contain such information since only a small fraction of the billions of ...
Noise path identification for vibro-acoustically coupled structures
Şerafettinoğlu, A. Hakan; Çalışkan, Mehmet; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2004)
Structures of machinery with practical importance, such as home appliances or transportation vehicles, can be considered as acoustically coupled spaces surrounded by elastic enclosures. When the structures of machinery are excited mechanically by means of prime movers incorporated into these structures through some elastic connections, generation of noise becomes an inevitable by-product. For noise control engineering purposes, a thorough understanding of emission, transmission and radiation of sound from s...
