Modeling Firm Population Dynamics: An Application to the Turkish Manufacturing Industry for the 1950-2000 Period.
Soytaş, Uğur (2009-12-01)
This paper examines the population dynamics of Turkish manufacturing firms using annual data on the aggregate industry over the period 1950-2000. Among the four models considered, the density dependence model seems to provide the best fit. This model is extended for further examination. One interesting finding is that business cycles do not play a role in determining changes in firm numbers in the industry. The number of firms is negatively influenced by average number of employees; however, it does not app...
Modeling electricity demand in Turkey for 1998-2011
Sayın, İpek; Gaygısız Lajunen, Esma; Department of Economics (2013)
This thesis estimates the quarterly electricity demand of Turkey. First of all proper seasonal time series model are found for the variables: electricity demand, temperature, gross domestic product and electricity price. After the right seasonal time series model are found Hylleberg, Engle, Granger and Yoo (1990) test is applied to each variable. The results of the test show that seasonal unit roots exist for the electricity price even it cannot be seen at the graph. The other variables have no seasonal uni...
Modeling monthly electricity demand in Turkey for 1990-2006
Küçükbahar, Duygu; Köksal, Gülser; Department of Industrial Engineering (2008)
Factors such as economical development, rapid increase in population and climate change increased electricity demand in Turkey as well as in other countries. Thus, using the correct methods to estimate short, medium and long term electricity demand forms a basis for the countries to develop their energy strategy. In this study, monthly electricity demand of Turkey is estimated. First, the effect of natural gas price and consumption to electricity demand and elasticities are searched with a simple regression...
Modeling the CDS Prices: An application to the MENA Region
Namuslu, Merve; Ayaydın Hacıömeroğlu, Hande; Danışoğlu, Seza (2017-01-05)
The objective of this paper is to study the pricing of a single-name credit default swap (CDS) contract via the discounted cash flow method with reduced-form survival probability functions depending on stochastic intensity. The ability of the model in predicting the market-observed spreads is tested as well by using bond and CDS data of MENA countries. In credit risk modeling, the CIR (Cox-Ingersoll-Ross) model is used. The main reason for using a reduced-form model in pricing the CDS contracts is the advan...
Modeling and predicting the effect of culture in communication: a mixed study using naming game and social networks
Yalçın, Özge Nilay; Bozşahin, Hüseyin Cem; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2014)
In this study we proposed a model that highlights the effect of culture in language and form a hypothesis that suggests we can see these effects on the utterances of individuals and predict their behavior. We used a variation of the famous naming game to simulate our model, and later compared our results with the empirical data we collected from an online social network platform, twitter. The use of hashtags as an act of labelling for popular topics is investigated due to the resemblance of the phenomenon w...
