Environmental impacts of extraction and utilization of finite resources are crucial more than ever. In recent years, mining industry has been faced with increasing constraints and forced to manage and mitigate the environmental impacts associated with mining. Mining professionals and practitioners have become obliged to make decisions in accordance with certain systematic standards like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This study presents the use of LCA in material handling system selection between off-highway trucks and belt conveyors. The main objective of the study is to provide an aid in comparison of these two material handling systems from the environmental perspective. The research study involves i) the conceptual modeling of LCA framework for both trucks and belt conveyors, ii) implementation of LCA stages, iii) simulations of the developed model. The result showed that LCA provides an important aid in making decisions for mining machinery which may have a substantial contribution to atmospheric emissions.

Comparison of BEST and LEED green building rating systems through cost based optimization
Uğurlu, Bengisu; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Department of Environmental Engineering (2020-1-25)
Buildings have significant effects on climate change due to vast resource consumption and pollution generation. Improving the effective use of limited resources and constructing environmentally friendly buildings are important in the realm of mitigations for climate change. Several countries have their green building rating systems tailored towards their regulations, distinctive climatic conditions, unique cultures and traditions, diverse building types and ages, or wide-ranging environmental, economic, and...
Comparative Evaluation of CO2 Emissions in Europe and Turkey Using GIS
Demirel, Nuray (2018-11-30)
Sustainable development requires extraction and utilization of energy resources on a viable basis for the welfare of human beings and global growth. An increased focus on sustainable development and global warming imposes policy-makers and decision-makers to prioritize environmental responsibility while maximizing economic benefits to the industry. Therefore, evaluating environmental aspects and potential impacts associated with energy resources is essential. Turkey, as a signatory of Kyoto protocol, needs ...
Comparison of Frequency Analysis with Density Based Clustering in Evaluating Extreme Streamflows
Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin(2018-12-31)
Analysis of streamflow data has significant importance concerning sustainable use of water resources, planning supply of short and long term demands. Streamflow, unlike many other completely random variables, is a dependent variable which is closely related to both meteorological (such as precipitation, temperature) and catchment characteristics (such as land use and soil type). Thus inter-dependencies should be taken into consideration while analyzing streamflow. Besides this, while analyzing streamflow da...
Evaluation indicators for selection of sustainable building materials
Canarslan, Özgecan; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2007)
Environmental issues have gained importance due to global environmental threat, such as depletion of energy resources and the impacts of climate change. The building sector is responsible for almost half of the impacts on the environment. Hence, this study focuses on the importance of environmental impacts of building materials. In this regard, firstly, sustainability indicators for building materials were determined and the environmental impacts of selected building materials were studied. Then, the evalua...
Development of a GIS-based estimator for streamflow at ungaged catchments
Öcal, Duygu; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2017)
Water resources management has been a critical component of sustainable resources planning. One of the most commonly used data in water resources management is streamflow measurements. Daily streamflow time series collected at a streamgage provide information on the temporal variation in water quantity at the gage location. However, streamflow information is often needed at ungaged catchments. One conventional approach to estimate streamflow at an ungaged catchment is to transfer streamflow measurements from the...
