Avrupa bütünleşmesinin ulusal, bölgesel ya da küresel gündemimizi derinden etkilediği bir bağlamda, geçmişte kaldığını sandığımız “aidiyet” ve “kimlik” gibikavramlar, siyasi gündemi oldukça meşgul eden konu başlıkları olarak tekrar karşımıza çıkmıştır. Bu süreç, özellikle 1980’li ve 1990’lı yıllardan başlayarak yoğun göç dalgalarıyla karmaşıklaşmış çok kültürlü toplumlarda “kimlik” kavramının tüm dünyada önem kazandığı bir döneme denk gelmiştir. Türkiye’nin AB macerasında da “kimlik” kavramı hep ön planda olmuştur. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun son zamanlarından başlayarak ufuk çizgisini oluşturmuş veerken Cumhuriyetin hedef olarak gösterdiği “muasır medeniyetler seviyesi”nin alamet-i farikası olan Avrupa, Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarından müzakerelerin devamettiği 2000’li yıllara kadar Türkiye üzerine kimlik tahayyüllerinde önemli bir referans noktası olmuştur. Bu bağlamda, Avrupalılık kimliğinin üzerine inşa edildiği fikri zeminin kayganlığı ve AB-Türkiye ilişkilerinin bu kaygan zemin üzerinden tanımlandığı savı, bu makalenin çıkış noktasını oluşturmaktadır. Bu anlamda, bu metin, Avrupalılık tartışmalarını tarihsel bir perspektife oturtsa da, Avrupalılık kimliğinin bir siyaset aracı ve pratik olarak ortaya çıktığı 1990’lardan günümüze kadar olan süreçteki Türkiye-AB ilişkilerini ve Türkiye’nin AB bütünleşmesi bağlamındaki Avrupalılık tartışmalarını temel almaktadır.
