Purification and Concentration of Caustic Mercerization Wastewater by Membrane Processes and Evaporation for Reuse
Tunç, Müslün Sara; Yılmaz, Levent; Yetiş, Ülkü; Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep (2014-01-01)
A membrane-based treatment strategy was developed for purifying the highly alkaline textile mercerization wastewater. 0.2-mu m MF and 100 kDa UF membranes were evaluated as pretreatment alternatives before 10 kDa UF and 200 Da NF membranes. Turbidity was almost totally removed by both pretreatment options, while UF (100 kDa) showed higher COD retention than MF. In total recycle mode of filtration, fouling of both UF and MF membranes were 80% reversible by physical and almost totally reversible (>= 97%) by c...
Purification and modification of bentonite and its use in polypropylene and linear low density polyethylene matrix nanocomposites
Seyidoğlu, Tijen; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Chemical Engineering (2010)
The potential use of Reşadiye/Tokat bentonite as a reinforcement in polypropylene (PP) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) polymer matrix nanocomposites filler was investigated. At first, organoclays (OC) were prepared by cation exchange reaction (CER) between the raw bentonite (RB) and three quaternary ammonium salts with long alkyl tails (QA): hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide [HMA] [Br], tetrabutyl ammonium tetrafluoroborate [TBA] [BF4], tetrakisdecyl ammonium bromide [TKA] [Br] and one quater...
Purification, characterization, crystallization and preliminary x-ray structure determination of scytalidium thermophilum bifunctional catalase and identification of its catechol oxidase activity
Sutay, Didem; Bakır, Ufuk; Department of Chemical Engineering (2007)
In this study, the aim was identification and classification of the enzyme having phenol oxidase activity produced by a thermophilic fungus, Scytalidium thermophilum. For this purpose, enzyme production, purification, biochemical characterization and structural analysis by X-ray crystallography studies have been performed. At the beginning of the research, this enzyme was considered as a phenol oxidase and analyzed accordingly. However, during purification, amino acid sequencing and structural studies, the ...
Purification of microbially produced ca-l(+)-lactate with a novel technique: drying induced elution of impurities
Özçelik, Damla; Hamamcı, Haluk; Department of Food Engineering (2016)
For the production of calcium L-(+)-lactate (Ca-L(+)-Lactate) fermentation was performed by using Lactobacillus casei. Production with inexpensive raw materials and low cost purification of lactic acid (LA) as Ca-L(+)-Lactate was aimed because LA production from renewable materials is limited due to high production and purification costs. Fermentation conditions were 37°C for temperature, pH was kept at 5.5 by adding CaCO3 as neutralizer and stirring was adjusted at 120 rpm. Fermentation medium consisted of...
