Chemical and isotopic compositions of thermal waters in Anatolia Turkey A link to fluid mineral equilibria
Mutlu, Halim; Güleç, Nilgün Türkan; Hılton, Davıd Raymond (null; 2015-04-17)
The complex magmato-tectonic setting of Turkey has resulted in the occurrence of numerous geothermal fields with distinct chemical and isotopic fluid compositions. We evaluate the data on these fluids in terms of water-rock interaction, mineral equilibrium conditions and reservoir temperatures of each geothermal field. The Ca-HCO3 rich nature of most waters is ascribed to derivation from carbonate-type reservoir rocks. SO4-type waters are found in areas where the reservoir is partly comprised of evaporite u...
Chemical composition of atmospheric particles as a tool to identify sources affecting aerosol population in the Eastern Black sea atmosphere
Balcılar, İlker; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Department of Environmental Engineering (2018)
Daily size distributed particulate matter samples were collected at a rural station on Eastern Black Sea region between March 2011 and December 2013. Particulate matter samples were analyzed for trace elements by ICP-MS and ED-XRF and for black carbon by Aethalometer. Mean concentrations of trace elements in the fine fraction varied between 0.0011 ng m-3 for Tm and 1382.42 ng m-3 for SO42-, while mean concentrations in the coarse fraction varied between 0.0017 ng m-3 for Tm and 1441.5 ng m-3 for Si. The dom...
Chemical characteristics of atmospheric aerosols in a rural site of northwestern Anatolia

Chemical characteristics of atmospheric aerosols in a rural site of northwestern Anatolia
Yenisoy-Karakas, S; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (1997-09-01)
Aerosol samples were collected daily at a rural mountainous site of northwestern Anatolia during September 1993-April 1994. Concentrations of SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, NH4+, Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ have been determined. Sulfate made up the 30% analyzed aerosol mass with a 2.14 mu gm(-3) average concentration. Measured concentrations were comparable with other rural area data except Ca2+ which was higher in our station with an average concentration of 1.12 mu gm(-3). Monthly concentrations of major ions fluctuate dep...
Chemical and thermal activation of perlite-containing cementitious mixtures
Saǧlik, Asli Ünsal; Erdoğan, Sinan Turhan (null; 2010-12-01)
Perlite is a volcanic mineral abundant in Turkey, China, Japan, the US and several EU countries. Expanded perlite has been widely used in producing lightweight concrete. Recent research suggests the use of ground perlite as a pozzolan to partially replace cement. This study investigates strength properties of high-volume perlite mixtures and the influence of chemical and thermal activation on their strengths at early and later ages. Both activation types can increase early-strength gain rates and strength v...
